Ok so I have friend in town (ford lover) thats been wanting to get a ride in my Z06. So I told her I would take her to pick up dinner in the Z.
I get in and its says pull key and wait 10 seconds ???? ITS NEVER DONT THAT BEFORE?? (I have seen posts about it)
I pull key and wait ......
Put key in and it says SERVICE COLUMN LOCK!!!!!! ......I have already had the GM recall performed and now my steering wheel is locked!!!! So I take the key out and put it back in .......
Then it gives me LOW OIL LEVEL !!!!!!!!
WTH is going on? I was thinking maybe battery related but I wouldnt expect my wheel to lock. I need to figure out how to get to work and how to get the car to the shop now as my wheel doesnt turn and I dont have enough room for them to tow it out????
Well I have been reading all the column lock threads but now I am trying to figure out what I should do to spend the least amount possible to fix it without wasting time as I need to figure out how to get the car to the shop tommorrow. Im thinking maybe the battery but I am not sure I should go throw money at a battery I may not need......
i knew one of the ways of unlocking it was jerking the wheel really hard, but you can only do that once so if you try it be sure to drive it to teh dealer .. or pulling a fuse .. i dont have any info unfortunetly.
Low batteries have been known to throw false codes, but I wouldnt bet on it. I am wondering why you even bothered with the recall since you have a Z06 (manual), the fix does absolutely nothing to fix the real problem. Try check your battery, maybe charge it and see what happens. Once you get it unlocked install a CLB and dont worry about it anymore. Good luck!
What are the ways to unlock it so I can at least get it to a dealer?? I will definitely be doing the CLB. The recall was done when I took it in for a oil change so I didnt do much research on it.........
I tried jerking the wheel to no avail....is there a fuse I can pull???
Try this. It worked on two seperate occasions for me. I can't remember if I had the ignition key turned to "on" or "off", so try it both ways. "SNAP" the steering wheel "HARD" left, then right, a couple of times. Mine released, both times I had this problem.
Try jerking on the wheel violently while turning your ignition on and off (do not start the car). It may take a while but people have used this method successfully. Some have used a rubber hammer to the steering column to try knock it free.
If mine is battery related will putting in a new battery unlock it or not?? Im thinking a new battery isnt a bad thing and should only set me back $100 ...Im going to try the jerk method in the morning so if it works I should be able to hopefully get to the dealership......
If anyone has other suggestions or methods please keep themcoming...I will be checking the forum first thing in the morning for more help.

usually when the column fails to unlock it's because of the worm gear or lock pin binding up or worse yet, a complete motor failure. According to many on this forum you can aggressively jerk the wheel to the right with the key removed and then insert the key and try to unlock it. This sometimes works. Others say to remove the knee panel cover under the steering column and strike the ECL assembly with a rubber mallet. I would try either of these options before I would call a tow truck. You can also try to reset your BCM by accessing the Instrument Fuse Panel under the passenger footwell....pull fuse 25, wait a minute and re-insert. Too Bad they did the recall as I think the recall on manual tranny cars does more harm than good based upon things I've heard and read lately. Good Luck.

I had this same problem on my baby. 2001 Coupe. First time, I had to have a flatbed come and take it to the dealer. Whatever they did, didn't eliminate the issue.
I tried this method probably 4 times after the initial lock-up and haven't had any problems since...
Put key in ignition.
Using left hand, pull downward hard on right side of wheel, like making a hard right turn. I mean you really have to put a lot of force behind it, but KEEP THE PRESSURE ON THE WHEEL!!! Don't jerk or stop, just pretend you're making a hard right turn continuously.
Turn key on.
Wheel will break loose.
It took me probably about 5 tries before I was able to do it successfully, but it worked. When it happened again, I did it again. It happened to me probably 4 times since, and all within a tight amount of time, I would say in probably 2 months.
Since the last time, which was last year, about June or July, I have not had a problem.
I know someone who unjammed their column lock by turning the AC on the coldest setting and blowing the air towards the steering wheel. Somehow the cold air released it temp.

Try harder! It going to be painfull almost as if you are going to break off the wheel! Iv had to do it about 3 times now
From what you're describing the battery is most likely your problem. If you have another car with a good battery it's worth a try. If there's not enough current draw what you describe will in fact occur. Check your battery for leaks and keep us posted on the results. Good luck I hope you get in going.
Ok guys....I went and got a battery this morning.....I used the above method of pulling on the wheel REAL hard and unlocked it BEFORE I installed the battery. Installed the battery and turned the key..........NO messages NO lock ........
Am I safe to just head to work or should I be heading to the dealership just in case????
If it were me, I'd first have ordered the CLB so its on the way. Then I'd head to work. It appears you had a weak battery.
BTW, when you put a VOM on the battery posts, how many volts does it read? It would be nice when this comes up again to know at what point the battery voltage is so low it causes this problem.
I'd also keep an eye on your new battery for awhile. Check the voltage when you park it for the day or night, then check it again before you start it to see if you are experiencing a voltage drop. If so, this problem is going to happen again, even with a new battery.
