Default Strange message on my DIC...

This just started happening a few days ago.

Sometimes, when I start the car, I get a series of messages (paraphrased):

SERVICE ABS
SERVICE TRACT SYS
SERVICE ACTIVE HANDLING

If I shut the car off, then start it up again, the message goes away. And, as far as I can tell, the car seems to be driving normally. My active handling button and ride selector seem to still work.

Could all three of these things have actually gone out all at the same time? Or is there some other sensor/computer/electrical problem developing?

I've also been noticing lately, every once in awhile, my turn signals either don't work at all, or will just start blinking INSANELY fast. Don't know if that's related or not.

Sorry to brake some potentially bad news to you. Same exact thing happened to me. The electronic brake control module and ssome brake valve needed to be replaced. The total was about $2600.00 which, thank god was covered under warranty. That's probably worst case scenario. Good Luck.

Looks like the same outcome in this thread:

ABS / TC / AH Link

I hope that is not the case for you.

All three are controlled by the electronic brake control module through the brake pressure modulator valve assembly. That happened to me, and in the beginning, turning the car off worked, then it progressed to pulling the EBCM fuse, and finally, a trip to the dealer for replacement of the EBCM and the BPMV; lucky for me, it was warranty work.

Mine does almost the same thing...just every once in a while. But it does NOT say "Service Active Handling". Mines a '97 A4 so Im not sure if that option had even been included yet.

So far it seems to go away on its own. Is this something that NEEDS to be fixed? Or is it merely a minor annoyance?

Thanks muchachos!~~~JadeDragon

Mine did it for awhile and it turned out to be a broken wire to the driver wheel sensor. $30 repair to the wire.

Mine does that and all ways has. The dealer fixed under warranty. Hold wait a minute; they said they did but I still get the message. My mechanic said it is a sensor in the wheel hub. I don’t get it a lot so I just reset through the DIC.

Be sure to check your battery connection too. I had that message and it was battery related.

Mine did the same and it turned out to be a broken wire to the driver wheel sensor also. I fixed it myself, patched the wir, took 1/2 hour.

You can swap the wire connections from right side to left and see if that is the issue.

I had the same messages last year and it was a weak battery. Swap or test your battery.

I would start with the most simple and work from there and pray it's not the Brake Module, that's what mine was but TG I was still under warranty. This is a fairly common problem.
Good luck

Check your grounds first.
Especially the G402 on the frame in the wheel well behind the Drivers Seat area.
There is a thread where someone posted scanned pics of exactly where all the grounding points are. I have cleaned up about 90% of them so far.
Had the same messages and I loosened, cleaned and retightened it and haven't had a problem since.
Just a thought.
Good Luck!

The warnings would pop up every once in a while and then disappear. Finally it was on constantly and I had to bring it to the dealer. Just picked up the car on Monday, they had to replace these parts:

Part# 12216561 EBCM Moduel 4.720
Price: $935.72

Part# 10343432 BPMV Valve 4.730
Price: $1,645.92

Labor: $245.00

TOTAL: $2,826.64

Luckily I bought the extended warranty, this repair already more than paid for it!

I do have an aftermarket warranty, so worst case I should be OK there.

Interesting suggestion about the battery - batteries here in Arizona do have an average lifespan of about two years, and I have had the car for almost two years, so I'm due...

Next question: If I replace the battery, what sort of radio-security-related problems might I encounter?

I had this twice. 1st it was the module, like mentioned above. Second was a wiring connector that cracked and did not connect properly. they were about 2 weeks apart

should encounter NO such problems. Just have to re-set clock, seat mem...etc. Get optima red cap.
