From the owners manual regarding the skip shift or CAGS (Computer assited gear selection).
When this light comes on,
you can only shift from
FIRST (1) to FOURTH (4)
instead of FIRST (1) to
SECOND (2). You must
complete the shift into
FOURTH (4) to deactivate
this feature. This helps
you get the best possible
fuel economy
This light will come on when:
- The engine coolant temperature is higher than
- You are going 15 to 19 mph (24 to 31 km/h) and
- You are at 21 percent throttle or less.
Better yet just keep the rpms up before shifting. You won't go any faster than you normally drive to do this. Besides the Corvette was meant to be driven with higher revs. Grandma's don't drive Vettes.
Does the skip shift come on all C5's?? and how exactly does it work
It comes on all the 6 speeds, and what happens when you try to shift out of first under the conditions mentioned above is that a solenoid in the tranny blocks your access to 2nd or 3rd gear, forcing you into 4th. The CAGS eliminator mentioned blocks the signal to that solenoid, leaving you free to access whatever gear you want.

Grandmas don't get stuck in stop and go traffic when the damm thing always picks the worst moment to lock out second gear. It's a 15 minute modification with a 2.2k 10 cent resistor.
if you granny shift just let it take you over to the right and then bring the shifter back and put it in second, no muss, no fuss just leave the clutch in until you've made the complete trip, half way down, over to the right, back to the left and down into second.
The skip bypass was the first thing I bought for my C5 and it is still sitting in its bag somewhere in my house because I don't think we need it
I know, CAGS is not even an issue with me when I drive my car. I guess for some reason everyone thinks you have to drive like a mad man using high revs to prevent CAGS from activating. This simply is not true. Test it out for yourself, it doesn't take much more rpms to prevent CAGS.
