Default Heat Problems...Maybe

Yesterday on the way to Grandma's house the cooling fans kicked on high speed unexpectedly. The temperature gage read 235. After returing home, I checked the water and oil level just to make sure nothing obvious was wrong. After cooling for a few minutes I started the engine and turn on the air conditioner while sitting in idle. After a couple of minutes the gage jumped to 235 degrees and the fans kicked to high. Yet, the engine does not seem hot (that feeling you get when standing next to a hot engine) and after shutting the engine off, the water hoses we not pressurized. After a few minutes I could take the water cap off without any backflush. Sooo, I suspect I may have a bad heat sensor. Three questions: Is anyone aware of heat sensor problems? What else could cause sudden heating (never had this problem before)? And, where is the heat sensor located?

ps: My son is attending Mechanics school at UTI. After six months he thinks he knows everything there is to know about automobiles.....He mentioned that GM had a 'recall' on the orange cooling stuff and that I should flush it out. Has anyone heard of a recall (or at least a bulletin) on the orange stuff?

pss: I have a 98 coupe.....................bj98
