not sure about the breakage. I would think on stock tires with TC on you would not see any more problems than the stock 3.42s. I would add the harden shaft though when you do the change just to add extra insurance.

I have had mine for about 5 months or so with about 40 1/4 mile passes on them without any problem (I am sure now that I said that something will happen).

My guess though is if you use 4.10 gears with DRs and drop the clutch at 6K rpm and everything hooks up well then something will have to give.

If you want another side I have heard of shaft of stock gears (3.42s) breaking at the track with street tires.

The bottom line is if you are racing your car something will eventually break. If you run your car on the street and drive it hard there is less chance of breakage, but still a chance. If you drive your car very conservatively - well then trade it in for a Euro car....

BTW - I love my 4.10s. The car comes alive with them. Though people say you shift more I find many times I shift less because 4th gear can be used in town with no reason to downshift or upshift. Through some nice twisty roads I also can leave the car in 3rd and have some fun with it.

Fascinating thread!

I have been planning a switch from my A4's 2:73's (Granny gears!) to 3:42's....then I was thinking I may as well go 3:73. Is this too much of an upgrade for my stock A4?

And is it even viable for me to consider the 4:10 (isnt there a 3:9-something too?)? I dont think thats very likely for me, but if Im gonna switch them gears out from stock....I wonder what the best ratio option is to get the most bang for my buck? Without killing all the connecting hardware?

Mine is just a daily driver, but in my mind Im a racecar driver when nobody's looking. Heck, thats what I bought it for!

Thanks!~~~JadeDragon

I have a M6 so I am running 4.10s but from what I've read, you don't want to go higher than a 3.73 with the A4.

You should really think about changing out your torque converter with the gears and also maybe a shift kit.

I had a customer in California who installed the 3.73's in his A4 with most of the basic bolt on's and he LOVED it!
I would not put a higher stall converter in unless you plan to drag race. for normal driving and just getting on it once in a while you don't need it and you will have a much harder time getting traction with the stock tires with the high stall converter.
goos luck!

great thread! I have been looking at 410s as my next mod for a while now. I think im sold now. Where is the best place to buy the gears? And what should you expect for a top speed with these gears and a slighty modded 6-speed.. i.e. vararam, LT's w/ full exhaust, ls6 intake.

ok maybe im wrong on this but i would think there would be less stress on things in front of the gears and more stress on things after the gears the higher you go

heres why

say you slam 400ft lbs into a 2.73

the transmission will turn 2.73 times for every time you tunr the axle

thats alot more resisitance than if you can turn tranmission 4.11 times per wheel revolution

it would have to deal with leverage

i deffinately see axles snapping far more often because of the increased torque being applied per wheel revolution

but you already replaced the stock output shafts with the hardened ones that can take it so i would argue there is less breakage infront of the gears because of a lesser load

so in short replace the output shafts for 300$ do both not just 1 (rear right)
i think i recall them being around 150 a piece

I have had my DTE 4.10 rearend in my car for about 5 weeks now......it's great. I have noticed no change in my gas milage (unless I am exercising the new gears heavily ) and the acceleration is awesome.

Andy at A&A was my final decision maker. I spoke to him on the phone and he told me a car with an MN6 trans and 4.10's is about the same as a Z06 with the 3.42's.

Drag racing and city driving 4:10's are great.
For road racing stick with the 3:42 gears.
