Well, for those of you that have been following my Z06 search progress... I had 2 cars in mind... the 03 EB with 1300 miles.... which I think is just going to be too expensive for me... even if I can get it for 38K... that is a bit on the pricey end for me..
The 02 EB in Arizona has ~3900 miles on it....
I have a good price set at $36,000 for it...
Few questions before I take the plunge..
1.) Is that a good price for what I would be getting
2.) The original owner was "Fleet Registration", so I don't really know what that means or if its good or bad... I assume its just some rich company man that used the company to write off his Vette... but Im not certain? Thoughts on the "Fleet registration"
3.) What is the best way to have these things checked out mechanically before I buy it? Does that service from Carfax work or is there a better place on the internet? Or is it better to just take it to a local mechanic and pay the 100 bones to have em check it out?
a.) Anyone know a good vette mechanic in Pheonix Area that I can take it to this weekend?
4.) The guy (a dealer) said I can put money down on it, contingent that it is "everything he says it is"... meaning if I don't like it, I can get my down payment back.... since I am paying 200 bones to go out on a plane... you guys think that is safe to do?
Lastly:
5.) Are all "stock" 02 Vettes California Smog legal and will there be a problem getting it smogged and registered in CA?
Thanks for help... this site is great! You guys are awesome!
EDIT: The main goal that I had for getting rid of the 97 Coupe with 39k miles was to get a "new" or "like new" vette, that will last me a LOOONG time, and that I can not have to worry about breaking down... for a while at least... would this meet the criteria for you guys?
I mean its an 02, which is dang near 4 years old now... not really "new", but its a lot newer than my 97, and its affordable..ish
fleet is what it says.could've been a rental, company car whatever.DRIVEN BY MORE THAN 1 PERSON is the probable history with that car.check carfax, and auto check, too.not sure if that;s one word!www.autocheck.com .but, fleet is the same, more often than not,as rental, but with 3000 mile, how much damage could someone do??

if it's got 3900 miles, you ARE still under the b to b,but check the time on it,and get a gmpp warranty, that will protect you, just in case!it's a beauty!!
I would say go take a good look at it, see how much wear on the inside or any exterior damage/repaint. Run a car fax just in case. Are those the original tires or new ones, give you an idea how hard the car was run for the miles it has. Thats my .02 cents good luck. Price seems good if all checks out.
I have run the Carfax... I was trying to get the GM Repair history..
The carfax is where I got the information that it was a "Fleet Registration" Thats to say, it was a "corporate" car.... Now, was that thing driven as a company car, as a "weekend warrior" to impress the clients? Or was it some rich guys toy that he just wanted to write off? That is the question that is preventing me from buying it this very second...
What does Corporate car mean?
It is beautiful, but I'd hate to buy a car that has been driven into the ground by a bunch of rich guys trying to make corporate deals with the use of a Fast car and fast girls approach...
You know something??? $2000 bucks more for the '03 is not a whole lot on a 60-72 month loan even at a 6.9% APR. We're only talking $35-$50 bucks more a month, maybe. Good luck.
Both times I've bought a Vette, I would take them to the local GM service center for a pre-purchase inspection. It only runs $75. to $100. I would do a CarFax as well. With those few miles, I wouldn't be at all concerned about the Fleet deal. See if he'll accept that deposit via Credit Card. It's pretty easy to later dispute if need be. Any Vette that has all of its emission equipment in working order will pass CA SMOG. I've bought 2 fairly low mile Vettes from out of state with no problems at all.
Good luck Bud
Again,in most cases, fleet = rental.corporate car could mean hertz,avis...whatever,they are corporations, too! with 3900 miles on a 3 year old car,it cant be that bad to buy!if it had 20 or 30,then i'd pass, but 3900 is a real low #.one thing you might do is tell the dealer you're uneasy about the fleet thing and ask for more money off!if it was fleet, then it may have also gone thru an auction somewhere, and the dealer got it for less than he would have on trade in!

Corporate means that I company bought it. In the past, I have bought serveral new cars for companies that employed me. The cars my company owned were always very well maintained. Probably because it was just another compay expense, and no one person had to pay for the service. This Vette doesn't have enough miles on it to have required any maintenance other than annual oil changes. Now stop dragging you feet and get on that plane to drive your new Vette home!
Go, go now man!
HURRY!!!

It's OK, considering the miles....
2.) The original owner was "Fleet Registration", so I don't really know what that means or if its good or bad... I assume its just some rich company man that used the company to write off his Vette... but Im not certain? Thoughts on the "Fleet registration"
I think your hunch is correct....
3.) What is the best way to have these things checked out mechanically before I buy it? Does that service from Carfax work or is there a better place on the internet? Or is it better to just take it to a local mechanic and pay the 100 bones to have em check it out?

Xtreme Motorsports in Tempe is a Forum vendor....
4.) The guy (a dealer) said I can put money down on it, contingent that it is "everything he says it is"... meaning if I don't like it, I can get my down payment back.... since I am paying 200 bones to go out on a plane... you guys think that is safe to do?
Yes

All 'vettes from 2001 on are legal for CA if they're stock. You will need to take it to a smog station when you get it home, then on to the DMV. They will check the EPA sticker in the engine compartment to make sure it says it's legal for sale in Californina. It will, unless someone screwed with the sticker. Check it before you buy - it's on the left side of the engine compartment.

Carfax has a different listing for "rental" and "lease" vehicles... so its not a rental... Just a corporate vehicle.. Whatever the hell that means...
Its a risk.... a risk that needs to be offset by a free extended warranty!!!
Dude just left his office, so I have to call back tommorrow... we shall see... if its meant to be, then it will still be there tommorrow and he will give me a free 3 year warranty... if not, on to the next one...
and the thing about the $2000 difference... I thought of that, especially because with an 2003, I can get a "new car" financing, with the 02, its the "used car" rate, which is one percent higher than the new car, which is a difference of about $15-20 bones... so the $2000 difference would be about 40-50 more, but would be 20 or so less cuz of the lower rate, so it would only be 30 or so a month more in the end....
Not sure if fleet is the same as corporate, but I bought a 95 Trans Am vert that was a corporate car. It was purched for one of their executives. He left the company and they put the car up for sale.
It was perfect in very way and only had about 4k miles. Got a great deal on it too.
