Default Descreen MAF sensor???

Just curious, is there much to be gained by removing the screen on the maf sensor? ...or is that not a good thing to do?

I removed mine a looooooong time ago, never had any problems with it, still get great gas mileage.

I did notice an immediate difference in response, much quicker response, I'd bet a couple ponies extra, but not much.

I took it out and looked at it and just imagined all that air it was holding up...
I'm glad I did, plus look at all the aftermarket MAF's, none of them have screens in them???

Me to, I removed mine when I changed the air induction. No problem and it did seem to help a little.

IMO, don't remove it.
If you want to remove it, you can trade with me.
I got one polished inside without the screen if you wanna trade with me for yours with screen.
Let me know,
-Mike

The MAF table in the PCM is scaled differently in the 2002, and after, descreened MAFs. If you pull the screen on a 2001 you should replace the MAF table with a 2002 descreened table.

2001 Z06 LS6 750 - 12000 Hz 0.39 - 428.46 g/sec
2002 Z06 LS6 (descreened) 750 - 12000 Hz 0.39 - 443.60 g/sec

***2001 and 2002 LS1 same as 2001 Z06

*** 2003 and after- all same as 2002 Z06.

Why do you say "don't remove it"?

I've never heard of this mod. What is the purpose of the screen? I'm sure GM put it in there for a reason.

I believe on the earlier vettes it helped to "straighten" out the air, or so they say.

Mike76002, why do you say keep it in?? I know some people have issues after they take it out, but I never have on my 02 coupe.

If you do take it out, just be very careful you dont' get near those filiments.

"I believe" the reason for the change in "response" is that it changes the calibration of the MAF. This is something that is "calibrated" and should remain that way.

Without the screen the air that flows through is more than what is sensed leading to a slightly more lean mixture, I believe.. If you can recalibrate or know someone then I'd say it's okay.. but if it were I.. I'd leave it.

Someone w/ more experience tuning needs to chime in on this..

Removed screens nearly 2 years ago. No problems...and slightly better throttle response, I'd say.

The screen is there to straighten air flow over the resistors. This was because the unit is the same one used for F bodies and trucks that had angled intakes and GM was just using an off the shelf part to reduce cost. C5’s have a straight path from the air filter through the MAF so the screen not that necessary (newer Z06’s don’t have them). However… you never know how removing it will affect your car until you do it and see if the PCM will re-adjust for it. Some have had good experiences, some bad. As for me, my 99 HT was running very rich from the factory and when I pulled the screen it improved along with better response. But I did buy an extra set of screened MAF ends just in case. Up to you pal. – C

Don't forget to clean the tiny filament wires with alcohol...you'll be amazed at the junk that comes off of them, but be VERY care ful in doing this!!! You will notice a big improvement in throttle response and in idle issues as well most likely. This should be a routine maintenance issue to do every so often any ways. In as far as the screen, deleted it on my 97 as well as my 95 Impala SS and every other vehicle I have ever had that had a screen an I have never had an issue to date for what it is worth.
