Hello everyone. I just purchased a 2000 C5 and had brought it into a chevy dealer to get some minor repairs done to it. While it was there the steering column locked up on it. They told me that it was recall defect that had to be fixed but they refused to pay for it. I researched the recall which centered around the around the steering column locking anti-thest device. The end result is that a crash could occur. The recall came out last year.
Now my question is, do recalls expire? The cost is about $350. Is GM supposed to pay for this? If so, do you know who I can contact?
Any help would be appreciated.
GM issued a recall for certain VIN #'s back around 2001.That recall did indeed have an expiration date,7/03 I believe.A recall was then issued last year to include the rest of the vehicles that were left out of the 1st recall. They should at least give you the claim form at the end of the recall document to seek reimbursement for the repairs.
I've also got a 2000 that I can't find a dealer that will do the recall. After a lot of work, I finally got the address of the part of GM that handles recalls:
General Motors
Recall Information Processing Center
PO Box 909989
Milwaukee, WI 53209-9989
I've never gotten anything out of them other than no, but maybe you'll have better luck. The dealers really hate to work on Corvettes, and they hate Corvette owners even more. Good luck. You'll need it.
ETA: The two recalls for the steering column on 2000's are #1044 and #4006.
BTW, I'd just suggest getting the CLB. It doesn't fix the problem because the lock is still there, but it makes it much less likely that the lock will engage. Don't play around with something that can leave you stranded or kill you if it locks-up while driving.
