I saw someone playing the trumpet while on the hiway.

I don't agree with laws prohibiting cell phones, I think that is unnecessary. All we need, and I think we already have it on the books is a law prohibiting driving while distracted. This should cover cell phones, trumpets, newspapers, pets, wheaties or anything else that comes along. Creating a new law for each of all the possible distractions is a waste of time and paper.

Saw some poor guy either fell asleep or had a heart attack. Anyway his car crossed over 3 lanes of traffic, runs up on the grass at a Sam's Club, hits a utility pole and burst into flames. I pulled in hoping I could do anything to help out, but the flames kept everyone from getting to close. The EMT said he never felt a thing, so I'm thinking he was dead before the car burst into flames.
Still think about the poor guy everytime I drive pass the place.

I thought I had seen it all but yesterday took the prize. A woman in an SUV full of kids and groceries was on the cell, rifling through a bag of groceries, and reading a story book to the kids. She was behind the wheel but she certainly wasn't driving.

I saw teenagers out running stop signs in the country at night. You know, turn off your lights so you can see if anybody's coming and blast through the stop. It worked pretty good until they hit a T - intersection.

I was in Orlando with the wife and we saw this car pull up beside an older lady on I4. The guys in the car threw a large glass bottle (at least 1/5 liquor bottle) out the window and hit the lady's car. She must have been terrified. We were too far to her left to stop and help, and this was before cell phones. I've always wished we could have at least gotten their tag #.

Just last week, I was driving behind some ole junker Explorer with a car load of kids in the back. The kids must have been acting up, as I could see the Mom, WILDLY swinging her hand into the general direction of the back seat trying to pop one of um, yelling at the top of her lungs at them, weaving back and forth across lanes and didn't see the Ford F-250 in front of her stopped. ***BANG***.

Fortunately, low speed accident, but as I stopped to make sure everyone was OK, she was STILL Yelling at the top of her lungs at the rowdy kids in the back, who must of thought the whole thing amusing.

I simply grunted "EVER TRY DECALFINATED COFFEE? - YOU MIGHT BE SURPRISED"...

Then the vulgarities turned at me while sauntering back to my car. Peacefully drove off, and wondered what it must be like to live with someone like that.

On a two-lane freeway, in the fast lane, seeing a car coming at you in the slow lane! It was two little old ladies driving down the wrong side of the freeway! They must of got "on" on an offramp and didn't even realize it. Never found out what happened after that...

Autobahn -> 160+mph coming up on a truck with a POS following it going about 55mph. Just before I get there, probably within 200m the POS decided to pass. Braked from 16xmph to <55mph and probably had no more than an inch to spare. In any other car, I would be dead (of course you could argue that in any other car I wouldn't have been going as fast, but where's the fun in that)

Ive been driving for about 37 years, covering several million miles and have seen just about everthing mentioned above, except the 2 guys going at it.

I have watched people crash and die, seen 2 decapitations [ yech! ] seen pedestrians hit by cars, motorcycles hit cars, and visa versa.

One of the funniest 'worst' things I saw, was seen in my rear view mirror as a Porsche 911 tried to keep up with my race prepared Lotus Europa fitted with Goodyear race slicks [ Nice in the summer ] while negotiating a really tight right hander. He went roundy-round and right into the thick blackberries and really scratched up his car, probably also damaged a lot of hardware. The other was a similar incident with a Camaro trying to keep up with me on a freeway exit ramp. He ended up flying off and landing backwards in the interchange median with all the wheels breaking off. In neither case was I racing. Both were examples of stupid people trying to make up for some low ego or something when confronted with the presence of a truely special car. After passing through my Lotus phase, I forgot about all that until I got my C5, now I see it all over again.....Just drive a C5 down the road and 5% of the other drivers just HAVE to so something really stupid..Ricer fly-bys really take the cake! 3 times now a ricer blows by me with the fart can muffler blatting like crazy, and a few miles up the freeway i see him again, waiting for the nice LEO to finish giving him his invitation to keep the local government flush and the insurance company profitable.

I hate cell phones. My C5 was ALMOST run into head-on by some idiot turning wrong way onto a one-way while he was chatting away!

A few years ago while driving home from Seattle some ricers were playing zoomy and one of them collided with a car resulting in a 4 car pile up, right in front of me! I was driving a big Ford van and could have piled into the mess, ...I swerved it over and got up on 2 wheels, almost rolling over, but I avoided the pile of cars... but the guy behind me hit them. I did not stay around to see the mess.... I was pretty badly 'shaken' and as I was unhurt, just wanted to get on my way. On my way home I stopped at a speed shop and ordered the stiffest sway bars made, heavier springs, and the stiffest shocks I could get. Now that van handles!

The worst things I have seen are the death things, and among the worst of those are the pedestrian who was hit by car doing about 70, and then after flying through the air, his being hit again by a car chasing the first car. His body came apart into 3 major pieces.

The other really hard one goes back to my childhood when I saw a convertable full of people loose it on the Ohio turnpike and flip in the median...Lots of bodies thrown out, and several half in-half out with the upside down car fully crushing them....One person had a head cut off by the car coming down on their neck. Everthing was bloody. It made the drivers education crash films of the 50s look like little fender benders.

I have also seen 2 people burn to death in a VW bug that spun on a mountain road, striking the wall hard enough to pin the doors shut, then be hit by a pickup following too close behind...When the PU hit, the bugs gas tank in the front trunk split open. I was about 8 cars back from it all. I'll never forget the helplessless of WANTING to do something but being able to nothing but watch them die in the fire. It was pretty bad because it was not quick.

The other decapitation was on a race track. It was a formula V or formula Ford, it was raining like crazy. Some guy spins off the track and onto the soaking wet grass. His car just slid and slid and slid....intil he hit a guy wire for an infield utility pole. He slid in just right to miss the front wheel, which would have stopped the car, but instead the wire caught his head sticking out of the chassis. One of my friends was a good friend of he driver, and was asked to confirm the identity of the head in the helmet, He threw up. The following week, barriers were up everywhere. That was way back in 1970 or so at Portland International Raceway. Things were NOT as safe back then around race tracks.

My husband saw a horrid collision back in the 70s when he was living in Sunnyvale. The collision had just occured as he came upon it. Some drunk in a huge Caddy blasts down the main road at something over a hundred and hits a VW bug broadside, exploding it. The engine landed on a building roof in the next block from the collision. The driver of the VW was disintegrated, and the Caddy was in poor shape, its big V8 ending up in the front seat area. The front axle of the VW passed through the Caddy, cutting the legs off the woman in the passenger side. The Caddy driver was not killed! Another one he witnessed was on the road up near Forrest Hill California. A car blew past him at a high rate of speed approaching the hills and sharp turns.....Turns out some family was coming home from a funeral, drunk, and depressed....Driver went into a ditch, hit a culvert launching the PU into the air, rolled over several times. One woman died 3 days later, the others lived and Mike had to testify in court about who was drivng and what happened.

Just 3 years ago I saw a Ford Explorer about 1/8 mile in front of me on the freeway, and one lane to the right, blow a tire and flip. It did not roll over, stayed on its side and slid off the road. Several of us stopped, no one badly hurt, cuts and bruses, everybody crawled out and walked. There is NO reason for such a crappy suspension that a blow out will flip you. Ford knows better, the GT40 is proof!

About 12 years ago I was in the center lane of a 3 lane freeway entering Portland....Some guy has a engine die and our lane gets blocked so a line of stopped cars instantly develops, and I'm driving a VW Rabbit GTI and am at the end of the line. I notice the car behind me not slowing down...Traffic is still zooming by on both sides at 65+, but it looks like a gap coming on the left, I FLOOR it and burn rubber through the left lane onto the shoulder median just as the car behind me rams the column of stopped cars, ..7 cars accordianed and a bunch of major injuries with life flights and ambulances... and I was ALMOST the rear car, probably would have been killed in that one.. Someone WAS looking over me that afternoon, it was a close call. I almost never drive in the center lane any more, I'm either left, or right, so I will not get trapped!

I could write a book about stupid things and horrid things I have seen happen on the road. Cell phones make drivers really bad. Things are WORSE now than 30 or 40 years ago. Cars are better, but peoples driving habbits and skills are overall much worse.
