I was wondering if anyone could tell me what would be an unsafe transmission temperature for an A4? Yesterday our outside temperature (In Arizona) was around 113 degrees and my trans temp was at 223 degrees. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
I ordered one today. I'm not driving the car until I get some feedback because that sounds kinda high to me as well. I hope some Arizona vette owners chime in and let me know what they've seen these last few days.

I agree that a trans cooler is in order, better safe than sorry!
Here in So Cal I was seeing low 200`s in traffic and or hot days.....223 is getting up there.
Currently with B&M tranny cooler average hwy temps are around 165, up to 180-190ish around town on hot days.
The owner's manual says the "high transmission temperature" warning comes on the DIC at 270, or when it "rises rapidly" (not further defined). It recommends reduced speed, to "allow it to cool to at least 230". Sounds like the alarm really should go off at 230, not 270. Anyway, your 223 is getting pretty close to the 230, so it sounds too high. Mine rarely gets above 200, even in South Carolina summers.

I live south of Tucson and yes it did get HOT ....but I have a beater I drive. I am participating on Friday's drive your Vett to work day so I may be able to let you know after that. You know they do test our cars in the Arizona proving grounds and Death Valley so I am sure they have seen the extremes. Here's to FRIDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you all for the info. Please let me know what you find out on Friday azmusclecar. Since I fried 2-3 clutch packs last year due to low fluid, I just want to make sure I don't have to pull that transmission again and have it rebuilt.
I drive mine everyday in Southern Mississippi outside temps running about 95 right now and the tranny temp runs at 212 normally. Last time I went to the track though, I got the tranny temp warning. I know it was upwards of 250. Next mod is a tranny cooler... Definately better safe than sorry...
I'm here in TX and it get's hot as hell. My 4L60E on my camaro is pro built and has a cooler. On hot summer days sitting in traffic it will get up to 210-220, but it shouldn't even get that high. IMHO tranny temps should stay below 200.
For every 15 degrees you lower your average transmission temp, you practically double the life of your tranny.
