The only thing I would put on them is some of the clear packing tape wrapped around through the hole a few times, attach the label and wrap some more to protect the label. Tires are pretty tough. They don't need no stinkin' boxes.
BTW, I hope you're not talking about shipping tires that are mounted to wheels. In that case you will need some really really big boxes.
