Sorry to hear about that. I hope I never catch anyone doing that to my Vette. I would end up in jail. If you want to try and get the scratch completely out, I would start by wet sanding the scratch lightly with 1200, then 1500, then 2000 grit sand paper. Be careful not to go through the clear. Then Buff it with 3M Micro Finish and Finesse it 2. Then finish with a glaize.
This happen to me before on a black car. Not the vette( Thank God). The insurance adjuster look at it and said that it would have to be painted, each body shop that i took it to said the same thing. Insurance wrote it up for $1500. I took the car to a detailer that worked for the dealers in this area(one that fixes minor defects in used cars) he went over the car with a high speed buffer and polish which took the scratch out and no swirl marks cost $35.
If this had happened to the vette I would do the same. You might could try this before trying to paint.
Sigh...really sorry to hear about this. Whatever the defect in the person who does it, it still doesn't remove the rage/sadness one experiences when you first see it. I had it done to the first car I ever bought myself, a 1976 Dodge Dart. Some dill hole carved the name Rose in the trunk all the way down to the metal. I was seriously bummed. Touch up paint was all I could do as I was too young to afford anything other than liability on the car. That damn name was still there the day I sold the car.
So what can you do today? Start with your handy Porter Cable Orbital Buffer. Since you said that most of it wasn't through the clear coat, 3M Swirl and Scratch Remover with a fairly argressive pad should make most of it disappear. Be careful, we're not trying to remove the clear coat entirely, just enough to make hte scratch go away.
Next comes the tough part. If the area of the scratch that is through the clear is small (less than an inch) you may want to consider touch up paint and the langka system. Langka can do a pretty good job of just getting the paint in the problem area and not everywhere else. Then, a couple of coats of Z5 a shot of Z2 and a snort of Z8 and you should be good to go.
If the scratch is still several inches after buffing, I would take it to a professional for either very agressive buffing/painting.
Good luck to you and let us know how it turns out.
The same thing happened to me the first year I bought the vette. It happened over night in a hotel parking lot. I was parked outside my room with the window open. Never heard a thing. It was keyed the full length of the passengers side through the clear coat to the fiberglass. I ended up takeing it to a body shop that specializes in exotic cars. You cant tell it was ever scratched, they did a fantastic job.
I tried fixing a scratch on another car and ended up going through the clear coat with 1500 grit paper, that is why i didnt try lthis again.
I think John Travolta said it best in the movie "Pulp Fiction" when he said "It is an unsaid rule that you dont !@#$ with another man's car" NO MATTER WHAT! FINISH HIM
Same thing happened to mine. Keyed it from headlight to headlight right across the hood. I took it down with 2000 grit and water and buffed it. I was surprized there was so much clear coat. ( the multipal scratches were terrible ) I blended the whole hood because the hand buff was better than the factory and it looks great. The hood looks so good that i'm thinking of doing the rest of the car.
Always sorry to hear this. The ugly side of human character does some
really screwed up things! Fortunately, only a relatively small percentage
of people resort to this kind of sick gratification. Hope she comes out
looking good as new!
I always hate to hear this when it happens to good people...good luck fixing the scratch. If you can get it out I would really like to know how you did it.
Well I guess someone decided my car would look much better with a big scratch down the driver side of it. I was woundering if anyone had any suggestions on what to do. I would like to try to get most of the scratch out myself (if possible) instead of taking it somewhere to have it done. The majority of the sctratch is not to deep. there are just a few places where it is extremely noticible. Has anyone had this happen? What is my best course of action? (Next to finding the punk that did this, and buffing it out with his face.)
Its happened to me before in my newly purchased 99 FRC at the time. So sorry to hear it dude!! Nothing worse than this happening for sheer jealousy. People are amazing! What's also amazing is that it NEVER happens to the AZZZ HOLES that take up more than one parking spot. I've even seen a few Vette guys doing that!! THESE ARE THE AZZES THAT NEED THAT TO HAPPEN TO THEM!
