In March of 2001, there was a GM engineer by the name of Phil Haartman who did exactly this while testing at VIR. On the front straight the convertible top support suddenly gave way at about 90 MPH and the frame snapped and struck his neck, nearly separating his head from his body. Obviously, the car went out of control, struck a Porsche, and sent everyone into the wall. Three died.
So, yeah...don't do it. Always have the windows up if your convertible top is up.
