If your car is an A4, then I have seen a lock that covers the shifter and will not allow it to be moved into gear, even if the car is running.
It may be from Mid America or Ecklers, i can't remember off the top of my head

My car has an alarm. If you have one, activate it. Park it in a well lighted area. When traveling, I try to park in an area I can see from my motel room so I can peek out the window and check on the car. Other than that, keep your fingers crossed.
A few years ago, a friend from out of town came to visit me in his Porsche. To make a long story short, we went to the mall to pick up something. This guys pulls out the Club for the steering wheel, the club for the pedals to steering wheel and sets the alarm. My comment was, "You really don't want anyone to take this car, do you?" He had alot of money in this car: BBS wheels, $10K stereo, engine work, the whole thing.
At any rate, an hour and a half later, we come out, and the Porsche is gone. The cops were called, search was on. Found the car 2 miles away in an alley. Both clubs on the seat, nothing missing, no damage. There was a note on the windshield that stated "If I want your car, I'll take your car."

dont clear the infamous empty gas guage code so the thief could think your car is empty. while he is at it, maybe the steering column will lock too!!! so i wouldnt worry about it. besides thats what insurance is for
I am planning a trip in my 2002 coupe and was wondering if there is
anything I can do to prevent my baby from being stolen?
I have a "Boomerang" system installed on my baby. Basically, the location of the car is kept track of at all times by a monitoring system. If the car moves without authorization a silent alarm goes off and the trackers alert the police. Even if they hijack the car and take the transponder with thim (preventing the silent alarm), I can call Boomerang and tell them that it has been stolen and they can track it anywhere in North America.
The location of the device is known only to he installers and from what I understand, is extreemly difficult to locate and/or disable.
That said, if someone really wanted the car and was smart enough, I'm sure that they could overcome ANY car security system. I'm not losing any sleep with the Boomerang.
No way of avoiding it if someone wants it... Just relax and enjoy the vacation...
BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!: Take everything out of it, so that there is no reason for some dumb *** criminal to break into it.. I even leave mine unlocked.. so that if someone wants in, they can get in... so they don't have to break a window to do it... I would rather they open my unlocked door and rummage through than them breaking my window and rummaging through anyways...
If they want to steal it, they will, no amount of money can prevent a good car thief from taking a car.. I have seen videos!!!! its truely amazing what can be done...

One of my employees told me of his brother's loss of a Corvette. It was parked in front of his office and picked up by a flat bed truck. No one paid any attention. It took months before I could relax when I parked mine in front of my office - even though I am across the street from the police department.
So... I walked through a WalMart parking lot one day and saw a flat bed picking up a Porche. I called 911 while watching. The police arrived within about 5 minutes and these gusy had a very rough time explaining what they were doing. No owner was around. I left so I don't know what happened, but the Porche was still there 45 minutes later when I took the return walk. No flatbed. I don't know if I did a good deed or not.
My advice - Drive it. Its a car. It isn't easy to steal compared to other cars. I have a convertible and never leave anything of value in the car anyway - always good advice. Have fun and worry less. Its insured, rental cars are close by. Its a vacation.
i always remember when a friend who was a locksmith showed me something years ago. i had a gm product w/ power door locks. i timed him opening the locked vehicle---it may have taken him 10 seconds until he had the door open & was sitting in the car. moral of story is if they want it, they got it. use some common sense but drive it & enjoy it. bub
