I thought the arrows were a gimmick too, but I figured I'd try it and send it back if I didn't like it... The arrows ARE NOT a gimmick! Last night I left work at about 3am. Got on the highway -- V1 started beeping -- radar in front of me... Then it stopped... But the arrows never showed me that I passed it!! So I knew to not get on the gas... Turns out it was in front of me by about 4 miles - and OVER the hump of a very long bridge. There was construction, and a lot of cops. It didn't look like they were pulling anyone over, but still... I could cite LITERALLY HUNDREDS of examples where the arrows have saved me.
There was a revie that I read on 5 Top of the line Radar Detectors........No. 1 was Passport X50 and No. 2 was the Valentine 1
This reports were done with Texas Dept. of Public Safety Police Cars and Police Officers. After reading that report, I bought an X50 2 weeks ago. I think that both are excellent units, the only advantage I see on the V1 are the arrows, but I dont care about them as long as Im warned in time to slow down and prevent a ticket.
Arrows are nice but after the recent POP update the radar beeps constantly, especially in the street. Can't decipher bogey from real and that is in the capital L (Logic) mode.
Hey 50 4ever how much was the upgrade? I just bought a 98 coupw ith an older V1, no arrows just a light band.
thanks from the bay area!
The price varies depending on how ols the V1 is. Go to the website at www.valentine1.com and click on "Upgrades" on the toolbar. You enter your V1's 10-digit serial number and they tell you what it will cost for the upgrade.
I have never seen a V1 without arrows, I hope they can upgrade it.
I think my upgrade was something like $58, but my V1 is a year and a half old.

I understand they work, but they really aren't needed. That is what I meant by saying they are a gimmick. It doesn't matter which direction the radar pulse is coming from because again, your result is the same.....you will slow down. So why pay $100 extra just for arrows?

Just think of this, you are coming up to a big long sweeping bend in the road and the radar detector goes off. About then you meet a state trooper coming around the curve going the other way. He gets past you so you speed up. Then bingo, there is another setting on the side of the road who nails you. Would have been great to have the directional arrows to tell you that the radar was still a head of you and had not just gone by That is why you pay the extra for the arrows.
and it tells you how many cops are out there, too!!and if it's pointing to the side, well, they can't read with radar from the side, only front or back...so,there is a big difference in units,in my opinion!

Maybe it's just me but, I wouldn't slow down only to speed up again right away just because my detector stop registering hits. I would give it a little bit of time knowing it would be a trap. So for me the arrows aren't worth the extra $100.
Anyone have a V1 and then switch to Passport? How do you live without the arrows after you are used to them. I mean the thing goes off and now you have no idea if he is in front of you or behind. I don't think I could get used to that, even if Passports were free.
I got the Passport and used it for a couple of weeks. Worked great. But that thing is HUGE. Nothing wrong with the detector but it was just too large for me. I returned it within the 30 days allowed and bought a V1. Never looked back. Discounting the arrows (which you cannot live without once you get accustomed to them) the V1 quality far outshines the Passport. It smaller size and metal case is much nicer than the Passports bulky plastic body.

Shylor, I understand your point. I guess the best analogy I can think of is this: Do you really NEED your rear view mirror?? The answer is - no, you really don't. You can use your side view mirrors, or you can turn around to look... Would your car cost less without a rearview mirror? Yup! But it's obviously worth the extra money to give you a more complete picture of the road (not to mention no sore neck)... Well that's what the arrows do -- they give you a much more complete picture of the radar threat. And personally, I'll take all the information I can get when combatting needless revenue generation... It's an extra $100... That's a miniscule percentage of the cost of the car.
