There is a lot of discussion on the Forum about this. I have had a V1 for several years and just recently bought a Passport. However I have yet to replace the V1 with the new Passport I bought, because I am just to attached to the V1. I bought my V1 from the manufacturer (I don't know how else to buy it).

We need a good "smiley" for "opening a can of worms" or "opening pandora's box."

Do a search, and you should find out all you need to know -- some very heated discussions...

I have a V1 and LOVE it! You can only buy it from the manufacturer or used on eBay.

Wow, it wouldn't be another week without a thread on the V1 vs. the Passport.... I have a V1 and love it. You can't go wrong with either. I like the directional arrows on the V1. The rest is up to you.

Default v1-passport

i had both.Still have the V-1.i more or less fell for the arrows and now every other detector seems useless with the beeps. The arrows tell me where they are and when to speed up,slow down,or pay no mind to it!I never knew that they can't detect your speed from the side,so now when the thing points to the side,i don't get so hung up!the passport worked good too,but i never knew where the coppers were!!!now i do.

There have been some very heated discussions on here several times between V1 and the Passport 8500. They are both very good detectors. I have the V1 but didn't buy it because of the way it looks. I've had detectors for the last 15 or 20 yrs, the thing I like most about the V1 is the bogie counter and the arrows. I've been on the interstate before where it has gone off, slowed down and while it's still beeping my counter shows 2 and arrows show front and rear. Another radar down the road that ordinarily I would have thought was the one I just passed. That's why this was my choice. My 02.

I would not suggest buying one on eBay, it would probably not have the most recent software on it for the new POP radar. I have had mine for 2-yearsand sent it back recently to get it upgraded for POP. I just completed a 6,800 mile trip from California to North Carolina and back. The V1 worked great, and I was popped several times. Another Vette on the trip had brand "X" (I can't remember what it was). We picked radar up at about the same time and every once in a while I would hear on the little handheld radio "where is that radar, still in front of us"?

I love the V1. There are other good detectors on the market but what sold me on the V1 were the directional arrows. I can also tell if the radar source is closing, like a LEO sneaking in the backdoor.

Arrows = gimmick. It really doesn't matter where the hit is from, because your result will be the same....you will slow down.

Ill tell you after the cross country trip...LOL! I do like my PASSPORT, but it hasn't been put to the real test, open road driving, here in Hawaii, it really doesnt make much of a difference. It was a toss up and I went for the PASSPORT.

I have the 8500 passport. I figured I didn't need the arrows to tell me where the cop is setting. When the alarm goes off I'm going to check my speed and slow down. When the unit stops screaming at me i'll resume my speed.

The one advantage the 8500 X50 has over the V1 is you can get it with blue LED's to match the dash lighting.

I think they both are good units overall though. I still think the arrows are a gimmick and the V1 also costs $100 more than the 8500 X50.
