anyone try this out?
this probably belongs in audio but this section gets much more traffic so i hope i get some response here....
has anyone tried the AIVX portable multimedia player? or something similar? forum member GLEX posted once about this a few months ago and i tried PMing him but got no response so i'm hunting for other users. my main concern is whether the harddrives can withstand the rough suspension of a sports car. i really would like to get this but am worried it'll be like old CD players were with bumpy roads. the worse thing is, it's likely to damage a platter and trash your drive rather than just skip if it is too sensitive to jarring.
how about someone that has tried an in-car PC? how did the HDD handle it?
Sent you a PM. I've been flying quite a bit lately. I get back home on the 26th. Will send you some pics and maybe a short vid then. I see you are in CA. Maybe we can hook up and you can see and test for yourself!
It has a 2.5" 80GB hard drive in it. I don't do any off roading so it works very well. I took a look at his pics he has here and it looks like he gets pretty aggressive in the dirt. These drives are made for portability. Just haven't tested off road yet and don't plan on it!

umm, me? what did i do?? haha, that was a once in a lifetime occurance! hey, the GF said she wanted a mudbath!
just mount it verticaly this way the plates wont crash if you hit a pot hole or bump. the 2.5" drives are more durable then standard 3.5" drives so you'll be fine. That being said...i have a 3.5" drive and its mounted horizontally and i haven't had a problem.
just mount it solidly or maybe use a couple of rubber o-rings to dampen vibrations...nothing more or you may get horrible oscilations in the plates and that'll kill it faster then anything.
I had a bookshelf pc in my durango, rigged reset and power switch in to the arm rest so if it hung like windows does i only pushed a button and wala. the pc mp3 was excellent but here is a little something to note. although i had no skip in the truck with stiff aftermarket supension that is your least problem. normal pc's are meant to be indoors. you have to think about condensation wich i took into consideration. as long as i placed it on a daily basis condensation did matter because heat fromdrive and internals would take care of that easily. But, when i added satelite to my system i just a bout forgot about pc mp3 player. after awhile i went to fire it up, yes pc came no but harddrive was finished. 40 drive with no software other than os, media player and winamp. the rest of the space was mp3s, believe it or not thats alot of mp3s. i could have put in another drive and restored music from inhome pc but i said forget about it. i also had wireless on it so i could upload and update from out front. You would be better of putting a sony vaio minature latop via velco right between the seats just inside the hatch if cope so you can take it indoors. vettes arent driven that often is ever in foul weather. even in the inside of a garage you are going to get condensation, think about it.
