Default Question for anyone using a GPS system.

Will the GPS antenna pick up if mounted under the dash pad?

Thanks
Steve

Steve,

I have my antenna right next to the xm antenna on the frame under the drivers tail light. Absolutely no issues. I would think there may be some if you placed it under the dash though. I am not speaking from experience JMHO. You may get more help under the electronics section though.

I have a Garmin Streetpilot 2610 and it works fine with just the antennae that is built into the power cord. The only time I use an external antennae is when I put it in my surveillance van due to interferance from other electrical equipment.

I have the antenna attached to the unit. It is mounted on the windshield. When I take it off the windshield, it won't acquire the satelittes. I would not put it under the dash pad. I would put it unside the rear bumper area, on the frame. I plan to put my XM antenna there this week when I have it installed.

It really depends on the sensitivity of the unit. I have tried several units - obviously the newer units are better. I got around the problem by routing an external antenna so it has a view of the sky through the rear window.

One thing to consider is the Corvette body is not made of metal. Generally fiberglass/plastic won't block radio signals. So you can get away with putting an antenna in places on a Corvette you couldn't in a regular car. However, if you put the antenna in an area with metal reinforcement or lots of wires and such you most likely will have a problem. If you can, find a place to put the antenna where it will only be shrouded by the Corvette body and it should work fine.
