My guess too ...and 3 with top up could be a tight fit.

When I bought my vert a few months ago - they gave me the stock wheels and put all 4 in the trunk. No tires, just the wheels. I couldn't believe it. I had my girlfriend with me - I told the salesman if they had to they could put the wheels in the passenger seat and she could ride in the back. She didn't think that was funny. 
Of course we had the top up - (it was raining 
) I'm always amazed at how much room there is!!

just make sure you dont try and put the tires in there
.. it doesnt work well.
figured that out when i first ordered my tires from tire rack ..
... the 17s might work .. but the 18s are too large.
