Thanks to the Corvette forum for helping me out with this problem. I was having empty fuel gauge issues sporadically when my fuel would drop below half a tank. Techron and "higher" quality fuels didn't fix the issue. I was always hesitant to go to Chevron since it is generally more expensive in my area. I decided to go ahead with the forum's suggestion and filled up a few weeks ago with Chevron and the issue went away. I am now on my second complete tank and still no issues. I had never gone this long before without getting the empty fuel gauge issue.
My recommendation for those that are having this issue and haven't tried Chevron gas - DO IT! Some quoted me as many as 8 tanks to completely rid the car of this issue. Luckily, mine was solved with the first tank. The only downside is the cost (for me). I just spent $40 filling up the tank...ouch!
My 2001 C5 has never had a gas gage issue and I have never used Chevron. Maybe the low-sulfur gasoline here in California has something to do with it. Hey, whatever works.....
I used to have the gas gauge issue, but probably havent in the past year. Not sure what happened there. I do, however run the tank until its nearly dry, and then fill it all the way back up.
I always use Mobil/exxon gas and never had the gauge issuse either.
We don't have Mobil or Exxon here, but I tried Texaco and Phillips, and neither worked. Chevron, thus far, is the only thing to cure this issue for me.

This was the only solution for me to rid myself of the issue when it was happening. I'd have to get it down to range - 70 miles or so and then fill it to full.
Shell paid $2200 to replace both sending units and the fuel filter and flush the system, that fixed it for me. And that was the second time it broke, warranty paid for the first time. I'm using Walmart gas now and its still working. There's only two or three refineries around here and all the gas comes from them no matter what the brand.
Even if you can't use Chevron gas you can buy Techron fuel additive/system cleaner at Walmart. I use Chevron gas and also add a bottle of Techron every oil change.
As for paying more for Chevron, if your tank is completly empty and you fill it at a nickel higher than everybody else, it just cost you an extra sixty five cents.
Here in Louisville, KY because of the EPA, we have to use reformulated gas during the hot months when the polution is supposedly high. It is death hard on fuel systems. It eats up trimmer, blower, and mower fuel system parts quickly. I hate it in my cars, because no matter which car, they all get better MPG using gas purchased away from Jefferson County and this horrible reformulated crap. But of course the fed's say it is good for us. I just got my lawn blower back with a $62 repair bill to rebuild the total fuel system.

Techron didn't fix mine either. I had to buy Chevron to fix it. I figured Techron would fix it initially since that's what Chevron touts as being in their fuel. This is also why I was apprehensive in buying Chevron gas to cure the issue (since techron didn't work). Lo and behold, it ended up working, and "knock on wood" hopefully it stays that way.
gas in and around my area is usually the same from pump to pump...but when on sale...chevron always seems to have the biggest line up so i used to just fill up at mohawk if that was the case....but since reading about some of the problems that some cars start to get i use nothing but chevron now....($62 for a full tank of gas (canadian))
