I recently "upgraded" the vettes in car entertainment to a Rockford Fosgate RAV DVD 2 unit. Awesome piece of technology. One issue though I forgot about the stock Bose speakers "issues". Now I am stuck with two options :
1- Get the Soundgate GMCRV1 unit OR
2- Upgrade all factory speakers
Pulling the stock speakers is the next best thing you can do after pulling the head unit. Anything else and you sell the new head unit short. You'd think a car that sells for $48000 new would have better sound equipment in it.
I did mine the opposite direction. I pulled all the stock speakers and replaced them with Sony Xplode separates in the fronts and 3 ways in the rears. Amped the whole system using an Alpine 5-channel amp and bypassed the DSP on the stock head unit. Also installed a 10" Alpine sub in a Stealthbox.
You look in, and it still looks stock...sure doesn't sound stock. If I can find a dash kit I like, I may take the final plunge and install a new head unit.
Thanks for the replies guys. Looks like I'm going to bite the bullet & upgrade . I'm leaning towards a full Rockford setup though. Lots of good stuff about 'em. Plus it would work great with the RAVDVD2 unit.
Do it all and do it right. No matter what speakers you choose, just make sure you get enough watts to them. Amps can make or break the system IMHO.
By the way, I'm upgrading everything with Polk Audio Momo speakers & subs, Sony head unit and two Audiobahn Amps . . . been building fiberglass parts for probably close to 10 weeks now.
Do it all and do it right, I Upgrade all factory speakers with focal Utopia,JL Audio 12W3,JL Audio 1000/1 Amplifier and JL Audio 450/4,Eclipse 21010 - Eclipse 5 Band Eq/Crossover, Kenwood KVT-815DVD - Kenwood Excelon In-Dash 7" Monitor/DVD/CD/MP3/Receiver
I would suggest to pull it all out. I am going to convert my 04 vert factory system to this: Alpine 901 Head unit with Focal 165v2 front and Focal 165CV rear two 10" JL Audio subs one 500/1 JL Audio amp for sub and one 450/4 JL Audio amp for ft and rear. More watts than HP
