Default Headlight trouble. Search sucks! Help.

The left assembly has failed to go up a few times. I turn the lights off, then on and it comes up....until now. I turned them on about 10 times before the left one popped up. Then it went down and made a strangely deep buzzing sound, that would not go away, even with power turned off.

Help? Is there an easy fix? Trip to shop? I found some C4 tips on replacing bushings. Is the C5 assembly similar?

Do a search for "headlight gears." The gears in the stock C5 are plastic and prone to failure. You can order the brass ones from any number of places, i.e. Ecklers, Mid America, West Coast Corvettes or even some forum vendors here.

Here's a thread on motor/gear question, too, but it sounds like yours is a gear problem

You need to replace the gear. If it's what I think it is. It sounds like you have some broken teeth on the gear wheel. This is a fairly common problem with our cars. You can buy good brass replacement gears here.

http://www.rodneydickman.com/retail.html

Just click on the "electrical" tab at the top, then scroll down to Headlight and look in the other vehicles column to the right and you'll see the brass headlight gears for the 97+ C5.

Others have also had luck taking the broken gear out and rotating it a half turn. The gear only rotates 180 degrees so if you turn it over you can extend the life a little bit while you wait for the replacement to come in.

Paul

p.s. As far as the search goes, use the advanced search instead. Here's what came up there for Headlight gear

This change is a necessity for all of the C5's - at some point in their lives
