My 03 AE is also out of warranty in about 30 days. As a result, I checked both of the options you mentioned. I am going with WD because I believe it has better coverage, a few of the FM gave me locations on the Internet to check them out, and last not but least, with their coverage I can go to any shop that will honor their policy. Living in a small town, I checked with the folks that do repairs and everyone has delt with Warranty Direct and have no problems with them.
I bought GMPP from Fichtner and have been happy with it. bought the 7/100 and its paid for itself twice by 60k miles. Only slight issue I had was a GMPP adjuster wanted to inspect the car before approving a $5000 claim, but they signed off on all of the work.
Make sure it is an All Perils policy which only excludes certain items versus a Name Perils policy. Usuall you get broader coverage with the All Perils policy/contract.
A "peril" is defined as a cause of damage or loss. To be covered for damage or loss under a "basic " contract, the damage or loss must be caused by a peril that is "named" or listed in the contract. Consequently, if damage or loss is caused by a peril that is not named, there is no coverage. In addition, the contract's exclusions must also be considered in determining coverage. In a "special " contract, it is not necessary to name or list the insured perils since the intent is to cover all risk of damage or loss. Here, too, the contact's exclusions must be considered; however, the "special " form of coverage provides a much greater coverage quality.

Re the "Mods" question, my WD contract has this paragraph under exclusions:
G. IF ANY ALTERATIONS HAVE BEEN MADE TO YOUR VEHICLE OR YOU ARE USING, OR HAVE USED, YOUR VEHICLE IN
A MANNER NOT RECOMMENDED BY THE MANUFACTURER. THIS WILL INCLUDE, BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO, THE
FAILURE OF ANY CUSTOM OR ADD-ON PART; ANY FRAME OR SUSPENSION MODIFICATIONS; LIFT KITS;
OVERSIZED/UNDERSIZED TIRES OR WHEELS; TRAILER HITCHES; AND OR MODIFICATIONS TO THE ENGINE,
EMISSIONS OR EXHAUST SYSTEMS.
How this is interpreted by the WD claims advisor and the service shop is an area that I wouldn't speculate on.
