Guy in our Vette club has '02, Z06 and has trouble downshifting into 1st gear...grinds like the syncros are going south. Car has just under 30K miles and HAS NOT been raced. Is there a problem with the syncros in the Z06 tranny...and if yes, what is best "fix"? Thanks in advance for any help you might offer. Bill
My experience. car had 35,000 miles on the odemeter, no racing of any kind, when reverse gear synchros went south. Repaired under warranty.
After driving the car approx 100 miles after the repair noted above, 3rd to 4th gear syncrhros went south.
Dealership did not want to warranty the 3rd to 4th problems, citing possible abuse.
I noticed on the reverse gear repair ticket that the mechanic "fished out" the broken parts. I brought this to the attention of the shop manager and brought up service bullitens associated with the 2002 z06 transmission. I sat in his office for 1 hr waiting for him to find the bulletins related to the 2002 z06 synchro and shift fork problems.
Even after finding the problems noted above, the manager did not want to warranty the transmission. My repsonse was "l'll fax the reverse gear ticket with "fished out" broken parts to GM and see what they have to say. Good tranny guys don't "fish out" broken parts; they tear them down and clean all parts/housing.
I told the manager I wanted a 2004 transmission, latest revision and got it.
Tell your friend, get the 04 transmission under warranty. Don't mess around with a dealership "rebuild"!

My reverse shift fork and syncro was replaced under warranty last year.My car only had 2000miles at the time. The new shift fork was made of steel and I believe the original was made of a lighter metal(?aluminum). It was repaired on the car as well.GM would not pay for a larger rebuild. My reverse does not pop out of gear anymore, however it is realiy a lot more difficult to engage the shifter into reverse

Big syncro problem with the ZO6's. If you want to see how many, go to zo6vette.com. I had the 5th to 6th gear syncro go at 9000 miles. The car was repaired under warranty. They had to replace all the syncros, all the shift forks were bent and replace the seals. The car wasn't even beat, but there is a major problem with the stock production syncros and shift forks. I haven't had any problem since after an additional 26000 miles and an additional 100hp.
My 01 had just over 20k miles when mine started grinding. It ended up being the blocker rings that hold the synchros. I had the trans rebuilt with new blocker rings and a steel shift fork. It is going strong for now.
