Supposedly it can come out the top. I beleive you need to take off the heads to clear the cowl. But I have heard it is easier to come out the bottom..

The engine is designed to be dropped out of the bottom by removing it along with the front suspension.

You must remove it from the bottom. The oil pan will not clear the frame. I just installed one today in a 2001 Z06 at my shop it's not to bad of a job. But you must have a lift.

I'm sorry Sir but i must respectully disagree. It can be done, it is just a lot of work.

I asked this same question to a few people. Mike Norris for one said that he HAS taken a motor out the top however he probalby wouldn't do it again, and it was too much of a pain. I can assure you unless i can figure out how to pick my car up over my motor...Sometime next year I will be pulling my motor out the top of the car.
