With the automatic, my dealer took the k-harness off and put the plate in that won't let the column lock. GM has a problem with bad relays in the k'harness. What a joke their engineers are..............
Get in touch with Corvettes of Houston and get the CLB installed. Dan
Thanks Dan..will do. I first need to see how to tackle this problem.
Since they did the recall, can I still install the bypass and what route
I need to take.... Because now I`m screwed it seems until I can figure
out what they did and how to source the right wires. Had I not taken on their recall, from the start, then I could probably do it right the first time. Since they "MONKEYED" with it and possibly put a code in it to shut the fuel off.... I`m driving in the dark with the headlights off!

Exactly, it is not uncommon for the relay to fail shortly after the recall is performed. Note, however, that removing the lock plate only keeps the column from locking. The relay HAS to work or the BCM will think the column is locked and shut off the fuel, which is exactly what is happening to ZPUMP5.
If the Harness K was installed by the dealer, you have two options. 1) You can get the dealer to replace the Harness until they get a harness with a good relay, or 2) you can just unplug the Harness K and plug in an aftermarket CLB. The relay in the GM harness K and the CLB both perform essentially the same function. If your column cannot lock, then at least you do not have to worry about getting the actuator into the unlocked position before you install the CLB or replacement GM Harness.

Yeah...you`re telling me dude! I don`t mean to bad mouth,
but I`m a still a little ****...
If he has an A4, if they dump the harness and put it back the way it was originally the only worry would be if the actuator decides not to work. In other words mine is now minus the harness and back to the original wiring.........

This is a good point, and a way you could get your car home without having to tow it.
IF you hear the actuator working when you turn on the key, but the column does not lock (meaning the lockplate has been removed), then all you have to do is remove the kick panel below the steering column, unplug the Harness K installed for the recall, and plug the actuator back into the wiring harness in the dash.
This should put the system back to the original condition, with the only difference being that now the column cannot lock because the lockplate has been removed.

I have a question that I think has already been answered in this thread but just to make sure I want to ask it again. But first, to zpump5 sorry to hear what happened, that happened to me last weekend and nothing I did got it unlocked. Had to have it towed to the dealer and trust me I tried everything on this forum but the CLB which I didn't have.

As for my question, I have a 97 A4 and had the recall done (see above ). From what I understand I should still have the CLB installed because the computer could think someday that the column is locked even though the actual mechanism and parts have been removed?
I really haven't been able to tell if the A4's have to worry as much as the others after the recall because of this and I REALLY don't want to repeat that weekend again.
...and please order your CLB as soon as you get home. Good luck, Tom
ok, I had the recall done on the steering column lock, but this still happens to my c5.
What is the CLB? and what is the Sticky tech article?
Where can i find these information?
Will the CLB solve this problem once and for all?
Where can I get this? Is it covered under the recall?
Will this finally solved the problem once and for all.
I had the recall done, but the steering column still locks on me.
It is very Embarrassing when you can not drive off in your nice vette in front of a crowd of people.

Here is a link to buy the CLB. No it is not covered under the warranty and yes it will solve the problem once and for all, with very few exceptions (1998's reported some problems).
