Lately ive been noticing when i go to crank her up it sounds like the battery is weak. Gauge looks normal when running, everything is lit up and running, etc. Could it just be time for a new battery? Just past 77k miles on her. Thanks,
If you have 77k on the battery, I'd say it's way past time to change it out. You don't want to get stranded.
Most of us who have replaced the factory batteries have Optima redtops. You should be able to find 1 for under $125 with tax.
If you have a ton of "U" series codes (i.e. U 1040, U1160, U 1064 ect) , your battery is most likely on it's way out! If you have a marginal battery it can cause your FOBs to constantly loose sync, memory settings to reset and a lot of strange electrical issues. Reset all of the codes and after a few days recheck them. If they come back, I bet the battery is at fault.
Get it load tested . depending on how much it sits, it could be that it the plates are getting coated with sulphates. This is a natural by product of electrolysis that happens as a lead acid battery sits without a charge flowing though it. The only effective way to prevent this and maximize battery life is with a battery float charger.
These devices are a 21st century battery charger. The microchip assesses the current drain or leakage and exactly matches the loss . This keeps your battery always fully charged without the risk of overcharging and prevents sulphate formation.
I bought mine at harbor freight ... www.harborfreight.com
do a search on float charger
Make sure before you put in the new battery that you pull the battery tray (4 easy bolts) and check underneath to make sure there is no acid damage. While you're there you can use some baking soda to neutralize and touch paint.
