Default modded c5 vs z06

hi all,

as you can see, i'm a newbie to this forum. i've recently sold my turbocharged acura rsx-s (345 whp, 226wtq haha). i'm looking to move on and go back to american muscle.

my dilemma is the following:

should i pay the extra money for a c5 z06 or should i go for the regular c5 and go for a cam and bolt on setup (i/h/e)? what is your advice here? i am sick of modifying my cars- but i get the weird feeling i'm going to supercharge any vette i end up buying. as far as straight line speed goes what are your recommendations?

thanks in advance!

meek

It depends on what you want. You'll probably mod the Z06, too....but it takes less money to get the same/better results. I wanted the Z06, but had to have the removable top of the coupe....so I bought the coupe and modified it to the performance level I wanted.

HAHA! Was it turbocharged? That's the only way I can see that kind've torque from a Honda 4 banger( and ALOT of boost).

Go with the targa roof coupe and make it to Z06 specs!

The Z06 is the better car, but if you are seriously modding you'll end up replacing most of the stuff you paid extra for in the first place.... and you make sacrifices you may not want since for C5s they are actual different body styles (I prefer the more aerodynamic hatchback, mag rid, and removable top). If the Z06 had an aluminum chassis seperating it from the fastback like on the C6, then that'd be another matter... but IMO go with whichever you can get the best deal on.

It's a lot easier to add power to a coupe than it is to take the top off of a Z06.

Im a bit confused... you say in your title, a c5 or a z06... but in your text you say c6 or a Z06... if the 2nd is true(c6/z06)... you know what to do... Z06 all the way... if the first (c5/z06)..

If you're going to mod anyway, then you have to think of what you like best... obviously you have less modding to do on the Z06.. but if you don't like the FRC.. or if you just like the Targa better... then go with the Coupe

Also, you have to look at color options... with the Z06, your only options are Torch Red, Electron Blue, yellow, silver, black, and a few 01 Whites still available... I personally like the Electron Blue Z06 (obvious bias!):

To me... some of the creature comforts that GM got rid of in the Z06.. **** me off... the dual electric seats, the good sport seats, the little gas cap holder!!?!? I don't know what that was about!! (CHEAP BASTARDS GM!!):

performance aside i think the frc design of the z06 looks far better than the c5 coupe or the c6...thats also something to think about.

For the most in fun factor, go topless! Get an C5 M6 convertable, do a good cam/heads package with headers and gears and your done! Put the "abs of steel" plate while your at it and reduce your chassis flex and insulate better too. Go for the '01 and newer to get the stronger rod bolts and better intake.

Nothin like dropin the top and listenin to the rumpetta rumpetta of a good cam at the stop light.

Mine is a LPE 427 - and it's a blast.

If you are thinking about a C6 Z06, get in line now and you may get a '07 - or - pay the stealership an additional 10-15k over MSRP for an '06, IF you can find one.

I choose the C5 Coupe because I it is a summer car and the roof needed to come off. I did all the necessary MODS to make my car more competitive than a stock Z06.

Good luck with your choice...

If all you are concerned about is straight line speed, then I would go with the Z06. I look at it this way., in terms of starting platforms

With A Z06 you are starting with about 350RWHP (405 at the flywheel) The Z06 tranny has a more agressive set up and gearing, and stronger clutch, it's also a bit lighter than the coupe. If you ever decide to Autocross, you will already have a high performance suspension that comes with the Z, that you won't necessary get with a coupe

With a Coupe 6 Speed you are starting at about 300RWHP give or take (350HP Flywheel), it is cool to be able to remove the top, and if that is important than it might be a compromise for you to start out with 55 less HP.

These are just a few things to consider.

Good luck and welcome to Corvetteland

BTW- I have a coupe because I love being able to remove the top

the main diffeence between the z and the non z is

ls6 heads
and ls6 cam

for 800 you can have the ls6 heads

and for 35 bucks you can find a used ls6 cam

course you wouldnt want to take the whole motor apart to put a stock cam in would you

the blocks are the same
everything else is mostly the same
power level wise

im sure someoen will come on here and say nope
the # 7 head bolt is a 16mm not a 15 mm

there area few other minor differences but most of the difference is above

I went with the couple, made a few mods, and couldn't be happier.

decide on body style not engine, transmission or suspention.

the engine you will want to modify anyway and the cost will be about the same most likely.

the transmision lower gearing will be redundant if you upgrade power (at 450rwhp, 1st and 2nd are ice skating) (the hardened rearend might help)

the suspention can be changed out easily but changing the top is hard.
