what "enables" hud?

what "enables" hud?
I recently installed HUD in my car and love it. What exactly makes it work? There's no projected light on the windshield, i'm assuming it's displayed inside the projector somewhere and reflected? I was hoping to somehow make our V1 hidden displays show up on the windshield like that or even a G-tech so we can show our G forces like the C6's do

I thought there was a post quite a while back concerning making the V1 project on the HUD. Maybe do a search and see if anything pops up.
