i just bought a 97 6-speed coupe with 37k miles on it this weekend.
i got the service history from the dealer on monday and had a colum lock recall open so i brought it in today and i need to know if i should buy a clb from one of the supporting vendors.
will it keep it from locking in the future? or is the dealer fix actually going to work?
you cant go wrong with the price of the clb if it guarantees that i wont get stuck somewhere with the colum locked.
if anyone can give me a suggestion i would appreciate it.

The previous owner of my car had it performed twice and the place I purchased the car also had the dealer work their "magic". It locked up on about 10 times in one week but I was lucky enough to break it loose everytime. I did the CLB and have had peace of mind ever since. My advise is to pay the small amount of money and get the CLB.

okay, so the dealer fix sucks. i'll order it today.
thanks, jared
it appears to me that the dealer fix seems to work for some and not for others. i do not know if this is because of the individual shop, parts, car, etc.
the column used to lock up on our old '99 but the fix was done at a dealership and it never happened again for the remaining 3 years that we had the c5 (about 15,000 miles a year).
on the other hand, I know numerous other people who had the fix done and have had the column lock up again.
The dealer recall does nothing for 6-speed cars except kill the fuel when the column lock error appears. Do not get the dealer recall for a MN6. Get a CLB. I've had mine in for four months so far with no issues (and I have a very early '98 which is prone to issues with the CLB.) It's a breeze to install.

I was going to ask the same question ! The previous owner had the dealer perform the recall work on my '02 6 spd coupe and he hasn't had any problems, but he only put 5,900 miles on the car.
From the responses above, I now know that I need a CLB!!!!!

I have to disagree with your point that the only thing the recall does is program the PCM to kill the fuel. The latest recall actually replaces the ECL. It's a moot point if the CLB is installed - which is what I have. I toss the notices when they come in.
Seems Lucy's got some 'splaining to do. They charged me my $100 deductible and said it wasn't part of the recall. They said the re-programming was part of the recall.

Don't you just love ignorant dealers.
On all counts. Call the region and tell them that your stealer charged you for the recall. They'll love that.
