GB, yes it is a major PITA to get to, I agree. Did you damage your PS pulley when you removed it? I have seen a couple disintegrate when they were removed.

EG, did you leave the pump bolted to the alt. bracket? If I remember correctly there are 2 or 3 smaller bolts that actually attach the pump to the bracket. The only way I could get to these smaller bolts was remove the pulley

If you were closer, I would be happy to help you out. Take a drive up to New England. We could have a mod party and me, Bill Curlee and Connecticut will hook you up.

GB, yes, I left the pump attached to the pulley as I was not changing anything on that assembly.

I have had mine off twice once to paint bracket and another for head/cam install. You don't have to remove the ABS cube. You can get bracket off block without removing pump from bracket. You will have to pull pulley from steering pump to remove from bracket. Best to purchase new pulley after removal of pulley from pump. Its only like 20 bucks for a new pulley, its plastic. Alternator will come off without removing bracket from block or pulley from alternator just two bolts holds alternator on.

Alright, now this is making sense. If EG didn't need to replace the alt bracket, he didn't need to pull the pump from it either.

But still, pulling the pulley and pump on a bench is easier than f'king with the brakes.

Not doubting you GB, just trying to find the proverbial "better mousetrap". If there's a possible shortcut, I'm in.

And as for whoever said it above, yes, there are unnecessary procedures outlined in the service manual.
Look up the left hood latch replacememnt procedure...after you get the wipers and cowl pulled off, you too, will ask wtf did you just do all that, as you will see that did absolutely nothing to help you.

(just an example)

Night GB

All, the ABS cube definitely does NOT have to be moved. As C5dream and I have said, you can remove the bracket intact and work on it on a bench. And get a new PS pulley because the stock plastic one will probably break on removal.

The bracket and alternator went on without a hitch!! I did not have to pull any pulleys and the brake modulator valve did not have to be moved. Everything was accessible with a wrench on the bracket while on the car and once the bracket was removed and put on the work bench we removed the power steering pump and pulley as a unit because the bolts were also accessible with out pulling the pulley. The only problem we had was with the nub on the bracket were an idler pulley is mounted. We had to hand sand the nub because the chrome was a little thick. But of course we didn't know this until we had the new bracket on the car. So it had to come off for fitting. It took us about 2 hours. We feel we could do the next one in about 45mins.

Thanks to Y2Kvert4me and EnglandGreen for the suggestions & help.

KarsC5 I have been following this post as I want to do this mod this winter. Let me try to itemize steps you took to complete the job.

Please correct me where I'm wrong.
1. Loosen sepintine belt and get out it out the way
2. Remove alternater
3. Disconnect power steering hoses from pump (how much fluid is lost?)
4. Remove and set out of way the power steering res.
5. Remove alternator bracket with power steering pump attached.
6. On work bench, remove ps pulley and pump from bracket
7. Send backet out for chrome
8. Reverse this process when chromed bracket is ready to be installed.
9. Fill power steering res to proper level.
Does this sound like what you went through?

Thanks for your help.

Hey guys sorry to reopen such an old tread, but my question is once I remove the fluid from the bottle will there be fluid anywhere else? Also when I put it back together do I just fill it back to where it was at and that is it? I have a Magnacharger car so my bottle is already out of the way so I am just gonna undo the line from the bottle to the pump and let it go into a cup. Also taking the water pump off to have chromed so that will be out of my way. The line that comes out of the bottom of the pump, just remove that and hook it back up when I reinstall it? Nothing special has to be done with that? So I will then disassemble the PS pump from the bracket on the bench and clean the pump up before I put it on the new chrome bracket, also have a new billet pulley for the PS pump. GM mechanic I talked to said sometimes the old pulley is seized to the pump and even thought the pulley breaks it ruins the pump. Sorry to ask all the questions but like everyone else I read the manual and freaked. I would rather do it myself to make sure everything is nice and clean before it is put back together.

I am not sure myself. I was hoping one of the other members who previously posted could answer for us. I also have a couple of questions in my post.
