[QUOTE=MY1STPEWTER I've come to the conclusion that Big Oil companies and Looters are two peas in a pod. Both of them take advantage of a bad situation.[/QUOTE]
Even in Texas where gas is cheaper, given the alternative of pumping $.19 /gal into my old 63 Chevy II SS with a whopping 194 cu in inline 6 with an AM radio and no a/c that was all I could afford in 1970 or pumping $2.95/gal into my air-conditioned C-5 with mp3 Apline with 4 speakers etc etc in 2005, I'm just glad I can afford the $2.95 premium. Yeah I'm 50 and enjoying the C-5 everyday.

The day I can't afford the difference between regular and premium is the day I need to put my Vette up for sale I'm over 50 also, and I remember some gas wars just south of Indy where prices were 14 to 15 cents a gallon in the early 60's. Hmm, that's less than the difference between regular and premium today

I am giving away my age but how about wishing for high test when it was $.36 per gallon! That was Sunoco 260, 104 octane leaded!
I remember when you could really torque off the gas station guy.. pull in and ask for a dollar's worth of regular. Get 4 gallons. Would last us all day cruising around in my mom's old Ford.
I remember gas in New Jersey in 1949 17 cents for regular 19 for premium.
from 1950 up until 1960 it slowly crept up to 24 cents for regular
from 1960 to 1966 gas in Pa was 24 cents for regular 29 cents for premium. 31 cents for Sunoco 260 which was straight 94 octane called 100 octane then. In 1966 it started to go up about 5 cents a year. It wasn't until the gas embargo of the early 70's did it exceed 50 cents. Odd and even gas days etc...based on your license plate number
Just another point of interest... IN 1974 I had a 502 cubic inch Cadillac it weighed in at 5200 pounds, it got 8 miles to the gallon and had a 28 gallon tank.... it took me 20 gallons of gas to go to the beach and back at 50 cents a gallon it cost me ten dollars.. today I make that same trip for 5 gallons of gas.... prior to this last gas glut.. Premium was around 2 dollars a gallon for premium..
We have to have (EPA says) the reformulated crap gas. It gets horrible mpg. This week end it went to 2.79 for prem. 2.59 for reg. I will show my age but on the air force base in 1970 I got gas for .19 a gallon.
It's all just to get us used to paying around $2.50 per Gal. I've noticed some of the mom & pop stations have no money to buy mid or high grade gas and only sell reg.
I have been burning regular gas in my 04, A4, Coupe, Daily Driver for about a month now and I have seen no real difference in performance or gas mileage. Many of you told me that the computer would adjust to regular gas and it seems to have done so nicely.
My Vette is a year old now and has 32K miles on it. I have averaged about 18.5 mpg over the past year which averages out to about 1,730 gallons of gas I have burned. Regular is 20 cents less than premium so if I has been burning regular all year, I would have saved $346 in gas money. Not enough to make one car payment!
I am going to start using premium again!
I'll stick with the good stuff for my baby. The cost savings to run on regular are not woth it.

I'll definitely give my age away, but nobody will take it.
I remember Sunoco 260 well. If you knew the Station owner well enough, he'd break the seal and sell you the leaded concentrate (supposedly 110 octane) for your Hot Rod.
Funny you should post about this I just read a reply in Corvette Fever to someone writing in asking if it is ok to run regular in their corvette. Corvette Fever gave a very good review back as to why that is a VERY bad idea. It is in this months issue. I will stick to Premium

I'll never forget my parents filling up our '58 Pontiac Chieftan (two-toned pink and white) and it costing a whopping $7.00 or so for the whole tank. Back then, I thought that was a lot of money. Now it barely gets you 2 gallon of premium!
KernelDee: I remember those "gas wars" too... At a major intersection with gas stations on all 4 corners... really got good deals on gas then. Nothing like competition to drive down the price. Too bad all the stations seem to be in cahoots now.

Before I left on my trip 48 hours ago, premium gas was down to $11.35 a gal. with a limit of 20 gal. per vehicle limit. I'm glad it came down from $15 per gallon. PS - this was a trip back in time from 2012 to your present day & date.
