Default For Alarm Gurus here...

Since we have a lot of experienced Alarm gurus here, I've a question. I understand there are alarms that come with a Paging device. So, if someone messes with your car, it will page you. Basically it looks like a little pager with some buttons on it.

Question - Does it really work ? How far at a distance will it really work? Is it affective, or just another gadget ?

Thanks...

I hope eatrice reads this. Well i have the Viper 791 VX that I have just gotten for my bday from friends.
Supposedly this guy is saying that Vipers do not have a sensor and the car will start in gear! ?!? Also he said I will need a computer bypass pice becouse if I try to remote start the car and the key is not in the ignition ( it will think that its being stolen therefor fry its computer ) hahaha it sounds like the terminator self destructing!)
So i would need that computer bypass for 200 dollars! wtf!! is this tottal bs I don't belive the guy a word.

I am assuming this quote was for your C5. Yes the C5 has what is called VATS. It is that little chip inside your key. Yes it does not need to be bypassed for the car to start. All that is correct...here is where the bs starts. VATS can be bypassed for about .03 cents. It only take a resistor inline with the VATS sensor to bypass it. That is not how I do it. I use a module from DEI to bypass the sensor. The reason I do that is because once the resistor is installed the VATS system no longer works at all and you loose one extra step in the security system. Now the module I use is nowhere near 200.00 bucks. I can not remember retail price but I believe it is around 75.00 or less. BS number two...if the VATS is not installed the computer will not fry. The car will not start but no damage will occur.

The Viper will start in gear though. I would hunt for another installer. One that has bit more experience with alarms and possible C5's. One that you feel comfortable with.

Yes there are a few different kinds of pagers. There are several new alarms that have two-way remote controls. These remotes send information to and from the alarm. Their range is limited though to usually line of sight. Another option is an add-on pager. Those often work well and are claimed to have range in the miles...I have seen some say as much as 5 miles. I have seen any work that far....no. I have seen some work well just not great. Honestly I purposely tried to stay away from selling pagers.

Where can i find the DEI Module?
Also I don't really want an alarm that will start in gear I have a old habbit of always putting my car in gear... I feel bad things will happen if I install this ...crap!

Anyone want a brand new Viper alarm with a 2way and all that bs...make me an offer =( Works on your auto fine would not use it on manual.

Just found this article.

"Some vehicles do not have an electrical neutral safety switch. Instead a mechanical neutral safety switch that physically interrupts the started wire is used when the vehicle is in trany drive gear. If the remote start is interfaced before this switch, it will provide protection from starting in gear. However, some vehicles combine the column shift mechanism and the mechanical neutral safety switch into one mechanical part. In these vehicles, it is impossible to interface the remote start system before the neutral safety switch. With this type of vehicle, if the car is left in a drive gear and the remote start system is activated, the vehicle will move and may cause damage to persons or property.

According to available information, the only vehicles currently manufactured this way are most GENERAL MOTORS trucks, sport utility vehicles and column shifting passenger cars."

That was in my viper alarm handbook.

My Vette had one installed by the previous owner. Not sure of the brand. I hardly use it since over 50% of the time, it dies within 30 seconds after starting up.

gogo...I think they are talking about automatic cars since they refer to column shifter. I have not seen a manual on the tree since the 60's.

Millenium....your car most likely does not have the tach wire programmed correctly. That would cause the car to shut off or it has an intermitent shut off activating.

I say do it right or don't do it at all.

I just talked to my buddy the installer he said ther are things you could do to prevent this by adding some magnets around the shifter they act as the safety kill.... etc hes cool dude knows what hes doing I guess... so theres still a chance =)

gogo....a friend and I tried that years ago. The magnets...well magentic contact switch. We did not get it to work because at the time we knew very little about working with metal to make the correct brackets. The brackets we made bent after a couple of shifts and then gonzo. I was thinking of making something for my C5 along those lines when install the remote start. I now know just a bit more about working with metal. I will most likely machine something out of aluminum and bolt it into the car. I can let you know when it is finished. If your buddy gets one going please share if he does not mind.

remote starting a c5 with VATS.
i looked into this awhile back. found a popular shop that does install this type of stuff on vette's..

they did state that a couple of special devices were needed.
they also stated that to get around the VATS system i would need a spare key, they would install the spare key in a hidden space in the car(didnt specify where), and then because of the proximity of the chipped key the remote start system would work.

i didnt follow through because of the fact that a spare key was going to be in the car somewhere. and the turn over of installers and employees made me nervous..

just try and explain that to an insurance company if you get your ride stolen...

you can wire in a parallel resistor for the Vats via a relay... a relay that is energized by the remote starter module. No spare key is needed, and the VATS still is operational when starting the engine with the conventional (non-remote) manor.

I wanna get a remote start on mine. I hate getting into a hot sticky cockpit. I hear it would be about 200 or so to have installed.
