Default Column Lock Question

Does the column lock effect all year C5's, or are some more prone than others?

Tks

I believe that there are only 2 kinds of C5's! Those that have had column lock and those that will!

I bought mine with just under 10,000 miles, how will I know if it has been fixed? What can I do to be proactive?

You can try turning the wheel to see if it enages upon removing the key. You should also be able to "hear" it enage when it does lock it. It's a soleniod that makes a whirring type sound when it enages. I guess I'm not sure what you do if you have an auto and they only removed the plate, but again, if it doesn't lock up after removing the key, you'll know.

Ummm surely someone can better explain this than I just did...

Other thoughts?

Its a safety recall and a freebie, take it back to the dealer, they will take a look at it for you.

Its really rare for it to happen, I've got 60k on my '98 and have never had it happen.

With just over 70k on my 99 C5, Mine just locked up on my Sunday morning just as I was headed for work. Had it towed to dealership monday morning and I am still waiting on my car to get done....

Seems none of the dealers in my area keep it on hand forcing me to ride my Motorcycle all this week.

I wouldn't call the column lock issue rare.

Is it something that I can just schedule and have done for free? Or will it cost me and I have to wait til it happens?

That's partially true. Upon my 3rd visit for this engineering marvel, they changed the ECL motor. This was not covered under the recall and as such I had to pay the deductible from my warranty.

I called GM and they confirmed that even though it was related, it was not covered under the recall. GM logic I guess.

Just some helpful info.

All of them seem to be candidates for the column lock to be a problem.

Shut your car off and take the key out of the ignition. If you can still turn the steering wheel, you're OK. If the steering wheel locks and you can't turn it, you need a CLB.

What's a CLB you ask???

Column Lock Bypass

Buy it from Corvettes of Houston, can't go wrong!!
