am i wrong here, tell me........ why do i always read here about Mustangs ? is it just me ? i always thought that Mustangs,Cobras or whatever they call them werent and still are not competition(style, speed, quality) to Vettes. i thought the Mustangs competition were cars like Camaros, Supras,Celicas and the like. anyone here recall late 70s early to mid 80s when you couldt tell the difference between a Mustang and an Escort ? never happened with Vette, they never lost their way, even the fastest( ?) Mustang is not in the Vette's league, the Mustang is a "me too" car, like, i have a Mustang,oh really,me too

'Stangs are OK. I had one, liked it - love the Vette.
Had an awesome run yesterday - 2004 GT hung tight with me during some 'spirited' driving through the twisties. We gave each other the thumbs up and went our seperate ways.
It all depends on the driver, not the car. If the driver is cool, I don't care what they are driving (unless it's Rice)

Do answer your main question... Mustangs are talked about here mostly because they tend to be the main type of car out there these days that wants to "play" stop light hero with us. Obviously, unless it is a 2003 or 2004 Cobra or modified, the Mustang easily gets smoked. As for quality, up until the current version... yes, the Mustang had pretty weak build quality. You are correct that the Camaro and Firebird have always been it's competition. As for it being a "me too" car... being a former owner of a 2000 V-6 and 2002 GT, the Mustang being a high-volumne car (between 150 and 250K sold each year) isn't a sin. The 2005 Mustang is selling like crazy... I'm glad to see it. Not every car is a halo car like the Vette (somewhere 35K sold per year).
On an aside... as a C5 owner, I would recommend A4 drivers to at least take a 2005 Mustang GT half-way seriously... 4.9 sec for us versus 5.1 for the Mustang GT is pretty close. I've never dealt with one on the streat... but statistically that sounds pretty close.
Just my 2 cents worth...

Not a thing wrong with the Mustangs. I've had several over the years and they are fun little cars. Some of the newer ones are very quick and will give the Vette a good run. But, when you get into twisties or similar driving, the Vette really shines. They are two different cars made for different purposes - but I like them both.
I smoked a new GT from a stop through 1st. Pretty body style, it was white just like my car.
All I have is intake, no cats and a catback, and aftermarket plugs/wires
The mustang seemed to be manual and it was an older guy so maybe he messed up
I tend to respect cobras of any year. The GTs are nice too but like was stated above there are just so many of them that nobody cares.
I had a 2000 V6 as my first car and the vette is my 4th

From a C5 A4 driver here's a question. I've driven stick shifts most of my life. Its great to feel the 2nd, 3d gear or the road, specially passing on the freeway downshifting into a 4th, or a 3rd. So far agreed. Now, if you're starting from a line. I've seen a point where stick shift cars take a quick lil DIP, when going from 1st to 2nd, and 2nd to 3rd. Its a quick dip that you can even see if you drive next to them. In A4s, isn't there an advantage of not having that dip spot?? All you gotta do is step on it, and keep your foot glued to the floor ?? Just a question. (Most A4s seem a lil factory weak in shifting, which can be compensated using a Transgo kit & PCM adjustments, IMHO).
Just an Example: I used to have the 78 TransAm. And on red lights I loved playing with the Corvettes. I didn't have much to loose, cuz I knew Corvette was the fastest car I knew. My TA was an Auto. I'd simply step on it, and in the first 50 yards I would be 1-2 car lengths ahead of the stick Vettes. I could see them take a dip, and come out of it in 2nd gear. Of course, I didnt have the power to match them so when they shifted into 2nd, I couldn't keep up. But we're not comparing TransAms to Corvettes now. We're comparing Corvettes to Corvettes. A4 vs Mn6, a dip during shifting VS no dips... I'm all ears..

I think the Mustang leaves many of the guys looking for the corvette performance, which withotu a cage and many other chasis stiffening mod's they'll never find.
I'm not a fan of fords, or mustangs at all, however, i must give the 03 and 04's credit that's a potent car.
Looking at today's market the Mustang is pretty much the only other affordable V8 go fast car on the market...the GTO maybe, but the styling is controversial at best.
It comes down to a choice a used vette or a new mustang. when looking for a newer V8 go fast vehicle.
