What's that growl when I start the car -99 Coupe
What's that growl when I start the Car?
The noise happens when I start turning the steering wheel. Car is a 99 Coupe with 41000 miles on it. Seems to happen when the car is cold or already heated up. Power steering level is up to the mark. . . John

Is it a "growl" or more like a squeak. Mine was doing the same thing, I think, and I mentioned it when I had the car in for service. They said all they did was lube some part in the steering column or something and it went away. Later I found this tech tip (see link), which better describes what the dealership did. Hope it helps.

I don't know what it is, but I've got the same thing. Seems to happen upon startup and with a slight turn of the steering wheel. It goes away after a few seconds, but you can feel it in the steering wheel and the engine rpm's decrease a bit. And, of course, it's intermittent.

the air pump under the driver's side healight area kicks on to lower emmisions, cats light off quicker, this could be what your hearing; it is an electrical air pump and is no way related to any steering movements
