Recently a co-worker had her mercedes s.u.v. stolen from work in broad daylight in front of our building in less than 3 minutes, video caught it all but of course poor quality tape so much use, of course now everyone is a expert on anti-theft and how this one was pulled off but I did hear something interesting in which you could write the vin.# down off the dash vin and if you knew someone at a dealer (thieves do have connections) they could simply order a new key and drive you're car home like it was thier own, is this possible .I've covered mine up but what x-tra steps can you take for a bit more security.
if they want it they will get it........don't drive yourself crazy.
FWIW I have worked crime scene for 7 years and have never worked a stolen/recovered Corvette....I have heard of 1...a GS...I am sure there a some but not that often so relax

This method of getting the VIN number of a car to be stolen/being stolen is really an old M.O.. Car dealers nowadays actually get a copy of the drivers license and some other form of verification. so it is harder to get a duplicate key from the dealer. But like free C-5 mentioned, if they want your car, they'll get. For example- even with Onstar -Cadillace Escalades are/were number one among the top SUV's being carjack- so figure that out
i remember a friend who was a locksmith years ago showed me how easy it was to get into my vehicle w/ power locks. from the time he approached the car until the door was swinging open may have been 9 seconds. if they want the car, they'll take the car. bub
If you are in a high risk area, you can open the hood and disconnect the plugs or the battery. You can even take some vital part with you (plug wires). Theives don't usually carry extra parts (of course they may bring a flatbed if they were really motivated).
Otherwise, lock your doors, pay your insurance premiums, consider moving to manhattan
Most dealers don;t even check IDs when getting keys made for Vins. I have had to do that for customers in the past and most just asked for the vin and told me how much it was. That may be differenet on a higher $$$ end car, but for most it was not.
but yea if you want to steal a car, juts disconnect the battery and pick it up on a flat bed. heck what cop is going to think soemone with a flat bed is stealing a car? they think it is just being towed for service or because it parked in a no parking zone.
The worst stolen Corvette story was from one of my employees whose Father in Law had his Corvette stolen from in front of his office. It was picked up by a flat bed truck and hauled away in plain sight and observed by dozens of people. It was several weeks before I could stop looking out of my window every few seconds to make sure my baby was still here.
I know people who install kill switches, fancy alarm systems, use guard dogs, etc. Cars still get stolen. Its a shame we don't hang car thieves.

Even if mine had Onstar, I wouldn't want it back if it was stollen! I'd rather take the hit on deductible than get the car back in "who knows" what condition... But, that's me!
I knew a guy who used to keep his Burmese Python in his car. Not poisonous, but I guess he was banking on the idea of an 8' snake making the thieves think twice ...

This device has been successful in completely stopping/preventing autotheft for quite some time. It's installed in my car and has helped out quite a bit.
Now those links are funny ET. I've heard of a few anti-theft devices from Stealth Guardian. Check those out. Those are real ones too, not trying to jerk you around.
