I think you are mistaking your question.

There were four (4) 'red' colors offered on the C5:

Torch red (all years I think)

Magnetic red 1 (one year only - 1999)

Magnetic red II (2000 - 2004)

Another type of red was on the 2003 (Anniversary Red)

Only the Magnetic reds were metallic.

Correct me if I am wrong but actually, in 1999, the original name of the color was "Red Metallic Clear Coat" according to the corvette registry. Then in 2000 they named the color Magnetic Red II creating the unofficial "nickname" of the 99 color to be Magnetic Red I, but I have never seen GM confirm that name. I know this from experience because I own a 99 and when I buy touchup paint, the label reads "Red Metallic Clear Coat"
As far as the original post, if I am understanding the question correctly, the difference between 99 red metallic and 2000-2004 Magnetic Red II is clearly the tone of the color. The 04 red is darker and closer to blue on the color spectrum and the 99 has a lighter color closer to yellow on the color spectrum with some bronze tones. Some may argue that there is no difference, but I can tell by looking at the back of the car. The 99 red is a closer match to the color of the tail lights than the 04 red. The 99 red is just about a perfect match in clear sun whereas the 04 red is much darker than the taillights. Just my humble opinion... hope I answered your question!

Guys, this helped me a bit, but a car I was looking at is a 98 metallic red apparantly. It IS NOT torch by any means. Maybe it's lighter than the magnetic II then.

No offense but a dirty Mag Red will look like a clean Anny Red any day of the week. When both cars are clean- there is no mistaking the two... I only say this because my mag red is a daily driver with polished chrome wheels. After a week of bad weather driving, the red gets darker and grey and the wheels go from shiny to yellowish. Again, no offense to the Anniversary Cars out there, I just notice it every time the car needs to be cleaned!

If you are looking at a 98, then it is definately "Light Carmine Red Metallic" very close to the 99 but a little more brown tones and less bronze tones...

The only reds offered in '98 were Light Carmine Red Metallic and Torch Red. Since Torch Red is not metalic it must be the other. Pretty rare color, BTW. Less than 2000 made in '97 and '98. I've never seen one in person.

You sure about this? Cuz I'll be honest, I like Mag red II the best, but I'll buy carmine if it's rare.

I looked it up and although the marketing name in 98 was Light Carmine Red Metallic, the actual build name was "TOREADOR RED METALLIC EXTERIOR" and the RPO # was RPO 53U for both years...
here is a link to the colors!
