Default Brake Dust

I traded my 2000 FRC for a 2003 Silver Z06 and I love it, with one exception. The brake dust is driving me freaking crazy. My C-5 didn't dust near a bad as the Z. I am having to clean the dust off the rims at least every other day and it is pretty frustrating. Any suggestions on pads that perform well but don't generate the dust of the OEM Z pads?

I have an 2003 C5 that has the same problem. I get tons of break dust. Is there a way to resolve this or limit it?

I use Poorboy's World Wheel Sealant on my black Z06 motorsports. A few coats on each wheel, & you will be amazed at how long the wheels stay clean.

I know a few guys who have replaced the original ZO6 wheels with chrome ZO6 after market wheels and they say they clean out much better.

the obvious answer of don't-drive-the-car-as-much tends to suck and flies in the face of why we bought the cars in the first place. bub

Switch to ceramic brake pads to minimize the amount of dust on the wheels.

At least try the ceramics, and, see, if they fit the bill for you. I like the Hawk pads, and, Performance Friction brake pads, myself. However, you still get dust. So try the ceramics.

You might want to try some Porterfield R4S pads. They are a carbon/kevlar formula, and also they are a little spendy. But even with slotted rotors I thought they dusted about the same as ceramic and have a better initial bite.

I've had ceramic pads on my car for several years and get very little brake dust. I also wipe my wheels off every time I drive it. I put ceramic pads on the front of my wife's Escape about 2 months ago and can't believe the difference they've made. Her front wheels/tires would literally be black in a week or so with the standard pads, but they've stayed very clean with the ceramic pads.

Do ceramic pads brake as well and last as long?

I don't notice a difference in braking on the Vette or on my wife's car. I could be wrong, but I think ceramic pads are a little rougher on rotors than regular pads. Maybe someone else will chime in.

I was going to say the same thing. At the parts store I work for, a lot of customers use ceramics....not only for the lack of dust, but they supposedly perform better at a slightly higher cost.

I switched to ceramics and I'm very happy. I had a Mercedes with aftermarket wheels pull up to me intraffic and ask how I kept my wheels so clean or did I clean them everytime I drove. Very little dust with Durastop ceramics. Braking is fine for the street.

Here's what works prety well for me.

http://www.corrosionx.com/rejexmain.html

After two coats of this stuff, when I do my weekly car wash I am able to spray on Blue Coral wheel cleaner (cheap) and remove 99% of the wheel filth without touching the wheels. I try to re-apply the rejex every two months or so to keep a good coating on the wheels. I will try the ceramic pads when it comes time for a brake job, but I can't see changing perfectly good pads until they need to be changed.

I use this stuff on the entire car also. It shines well and seems to allow the Califoniia duster to do a pretty good job of bug removal.
