My 2004 with 3300miles on it has a pass. door speaker that sounds blown when certain bass notes are hit. All the other speakers sound "ok" not great for a $48K car....
I am in the "it sounds pretty crappy group" but is there any agreement on if it is the speakers or the head unit that is crap, or niether and I just need a sub and amp in the rear? And if I only need a sub, what size's sound compliments the stock system?
I'll gladly give you my stereo. I rarely listed to mine when I'm driving. My car is too loud and besides, I'd rather listen to the motor. Yes, I'm getting old.
I apologize but I urge those of you who are content with the system in the C5 to listen to a stock premium system (Mach 460 for the Mustang and Monsoon for GM) in a late 90's - early 00's Mustang, Camaro of Firebird. You will quickly discover the shortcomings of the system in the C5.
Funny, how GM can put a kick butt system in a 20-25K vehicle but didn't with the C5.
Debates about how good the Bose is are about as productive as manual vs automatic. It's as good as any individual thinks it is. The system is easily upgradable, to whatever degree your wallet can handle and the forum is full of info on the choices available.

I have this exact same issue in my 2000. Even at low volume, when there's a deep note or voice.....my passenger speaker makes a rattling noise like it's blown. However, I don't think it is. While this noise is being emitted, push on the speaker screen (the one that says "Bose" on it), and see if the noise goes away. When I push on mine it eliminates the noise, but I have not been able to figure out how to tighten down the screen to make it go away completely.
I don't get why everyone bashes the Bose speakers in Vettes. The ones and my C5 sound exellent. Hell, even the ones in my old C4 were some of the best sounding stock speakers I've heard. It sounds crystal clear. I am MORE than happy with the stock setup in my C5.
I am listening to my engine and exhaust most of the time anyway.
Mine is ok..I'm beginning to wonder if they're not all created equally...The bose in my mom's '01 sounded much better than mine..A forum member noted that he thought mine sounded better than his..
Mine are clear and crisp. My last car I had nothing but infinity (aftermarket system) and this sounds better. All the vette needed was some deeper bass. Which I already fixed that issue Bryan
...for the He**uvit. The bass response on my '03 is massive and at times overbearing (sometimes I reduce it) and I LOVE high bass levels !
Now my 17 year old installed a huge subwoofer in his Silverado, but even he likes the Bose in the 'vette. My prev. '01 had the same system, but I don't remember it sounding as good as the one in the '03 and both cars are coupes, identical in all ways.
I agree that the sound system is ok for a stock system but has allot of room for improvement. This is true of most factory systems, even some of the newer cars that are adding subs to the stock system. The smaller speakers are not very good at handling the bass at the higher volumes ( I really like my music loud - although I do turn it down at intersections so as not to irritate my neighbors with the bass thump). Adding an amp and subwoofer is one of the cheaper mods you can make while adding allot of depth and richness to the system. Even at lower volume levels it adds depth for those that do not like the loud volumes like some of us. (putting bass blockers in line for the stock speakers if you add a subwoofer will help eliminate the distortion bass causes in the smaller speakers at high volumes). If you want to take it a step farther change out the stock speakers as well. This works well for whatever music you like to listen to. I like classic and hard rock but occasionally throw in some soft jazz when the mood strikes. Sounds really good for all.
Look over in the general corvette forum - audio electronics and there are some some good posts on amp placement, sub boxes, etc.
Fortunately for me my son has been an installer at one of the high end audio chains for over seven years and takes good care of me for all of my mobile audio needs. I am just starting the list for my vert (had it only a month now) but have a great system in my Durango that I can attest to the high end stock system improving dramatically with upgrades. I put in an AVIC-N1 head unit (nav, dvd, xm, voice activation, backup camera, etc), alpine 5 channel amp running my 8 polk speakers, and a kenwood amp running my 8 and 10 inch subs.
Only planning on an amp, subs, and stock speaker replacement for the vette though. Will make a huge improvement. I have also had the opportunity to listen to many upgrades as my son always calls when a very cool ride comes in for an upgrade. He just did an amp and sub on an brand new Millineum Yellow Z06 last week - it was in the shop next to a Lamborghini he was working on as well.
Its all about personal preference. If you like the stock system - leave it and enjoy. It is not a terrible system by any means. If you want a rich, high end mobile audio experience - get some quality aftermarket upgrades.
a friend of mine had a , ... <cough> nissan <cough> and a sound guy offered him a 6,500 stereo for 50% off if he let him
use the car for a weekend show
he was deliriously happy with it
then 2 month went by and stuff started to rattle, just 6m later just about every bolt in the cabin had come boom-boom-chicka-boom,boom loose ... he pulled the stereo out and sold it
