Default Side Molding Question

Hey guys! New to the forum here I'm looking to get a C5 and was wondering why some have side moldings (on each door) and some don't. If I do end up getting one with the moldings, can the moldings be removed? If so, any tips to get that done in the cleanest way possible?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome to the forum with some of the greatest people on the planet ... except for that one guy

Some technical terms for them are "Spears, those side thingies, and those long, narrow things on the doors." We just call them BSM's (Body Side Moldings). They are totally preference.

Yes. You can remove them. Blow dryer to heat them up, some fishing line to cut the 3M tape holding them one, some adhesive remover (safe for plastics... I use Goo Be Gone) and voilà! Depending on the age of the paint, you may need to remove oxidation from the door to match the paint which was under the BSM. Some people leave them on in fear of this.... but it can be done right.

Enjoy your stay and don't forget to wave

They are an option on a C5, I don't remember the RPO for them.

They are glued on, if they've been on for a while and you take them off, you'll probably have a stripe where the paint isn't faded. Some colours show it worse than others.

The body side moldings were a $75 option (B84) from the factory. $300 if dealer installed.

I agree with the cheers - but not the "fear factor" about the paint!
WAY too many postings about success - and the "occasional" scare story!

I took mine off - the dreaded "millinium yellow" - and NO sign of problems.

Go for it!

You can remove them yourself. I took a sharp, long bladed kitchen knife and they were off in about 10 minutes, no problem. Make sure you keep tension on the molding so you don’t scratch the surface of the door. Then, I used some WD40 to get the remaining sticky adhesive off. Finally, I use a really good car wax and rubbed out any fade. It looks great. I highly recommend it.

They started out as a $75 option but changed to a $150 option in 2002.
