I just noticed that the front windshield of the C5 blocks U/V light pretty darn well. I have the vette in my garage halloween display flooded with black lights. And when I went to put highly fluorescent skull on the front dash pad, it no longer would glow at all... zip... nada. Interesting. I had no idea the windshield would block out that much of the black lights.
I guess they had a point in making the glass be that way. not sure what it is though.
All automotive safety glass does NOT block UV. Front windshields are made from laminated glass which is two layers of float glass (not tempered) and has a PVB (Poly Vinyl Butyl) interlayer, which is typically .030" thick. All other automotive glass is tempered glass which is a heat treated glass. It is 8-10 times stronger impact wise than regular float glass (annealed glass). Laminated glass blocks approx. 99.6% of all UV light. So, apparently, a black light emits light from the UV spectrum. Tempered glass or annealed glass blocks a very small percentage of UV and tinted glass will block a bit more. You can get sun burned through all glass except the front windshield. The HUD is a special film that is inserted between the glass only in the area of the display, not the whole windshield area. Its been a while since I was in the glass biz, but this is what I remember.!!!!
