Actually I don't think you hit reverse but what happened is you beat the synchronizers. I've done this myself in a manner similar to yours and my car growled going into 6th.
I think there is something in the manual about skipping gears. Normal shifting - no problem - spirited driving may get you a growl or two.

It would have been even more scary had you been in a car right behind you! A club member of ours did this a few months ago during some "spirited" driving down the highway; when those of us right behind him saw the REVERSE LIGHTS come on!!!!!! The blocker did it's job and he did get some grinding from the missed shift, but the pucker factor for us was quite high for a split second, never thought I'd see reverse lights at 100+.
Unless your reverse lockout failed, it is almost impossible to hit reverse by accident. You would have to be shifting extremely hard. After having my tranny out for a clutch swap, mine got stuck to where it locked out reverse even when stopped. It took both hands and quite a bit of effort to get it into reverse.
I hit reverse twice today, same as VinnieR, I was going from 2nd to 5th. It's also something I do all the time, wind it out in 1st and 2nd then just drop into 5th. Solenoid blocks it sometimes, but not others.
What a dumb A$$!!!! Well. . . we are ALL dumb A$$'s from time to time, as a matter of fact we take turns, it just happened to be YOUR turn, did'nt you get the memo?
I've never accidentally shifted into reverse, but I have accidentally shifted into 1st gear from shall we say a rather high speed . . . bending a push rod.

Thanks for all the input and personal confessions. Better than a shrink's couch. I can now look myself in the mirror again. Unfortunately, I'm still just as ugly.
Was your dealer able to detect the bad sensor through the normal electronic checks or did he have to do some special diagnosic procedures? I ask this because I am not convinced that any of the four dealers in Austin have any clue how to work on Vettes. Do you remember the exact part they replaced? I might be able to tell the local guys to specifically check a given sensor and they might be able to do that.
I knew it was a "sensor" 'casue like you I got help on the Forum in diagnosing the problem.
My dealer did not beleive me so I had to take the shop forman for a test ride to recreate the event. He said he had never heard of anyone being able to stick it in reverse and grind the gears at over 3mph, a "sensor" prevents that from happening. I did the recreation within blocks of the shop. They had to order the sensor. They were able to make the change in a day w/o dropping the tranny.
Since the change out no more problems! Hope you can get it fixed.
Why? So they can drive Camaro's or Mustangs like they do here? Yeah, the cops do this...
If you drive responsibly, you're fine...
I must confess brother... I'm a speeder. If I see a white cop looking car I slow down to the speed limit. I don't usually speed more than 10mph on the highway (and I don't speed in town) but I always slow down and don't take chances even with a radar detector when I think I see a cop.
I was riding with a cousin and he did the same thing... as we passed the white Crown Vic it was an old couple and he said it should be illegal... I thought it was funny

After I "dumb shifted" it, I reread the owner's manual about the lock out. I tried at 10 mph to get it into reverse and it wouldn't go. I tried again at about 5 and it wouldn't go. It finally went into reverse at 2-3 mph forward. I think the lockout is probably working, but I either overpowered the lock out or beat the 5th gear syncros as Blindfingers thought.
If this happens again for whatever reason, she's going back to the dealer for him to figure it out. At least I'll have a record of complaining about it should bad things happen, particularly after the warranty.
It's interesting: my first Vette was a '66 big block wide ratio 4 speed which had a manual lockout on the shifter. No power on earth could get that shifter into reverse without lifting that lockout. For all the progress we've made, the lockout system on the C2 may have been better. If it is, that's about all that was better on the C2. The C5 is a better car in every other respect. No contest.
The last time I grabbed 5th while driving like a crazy man I was doing 145mph. How did you drive crazy and try for 5th at 85? I can do 85 in 2nd/3rtd gear.
You must have been on the "Dukes of Hazzard II" cruise!!
