Who says anything about chicken wire. I've seen the screen at Home Depot and Lowe's and they are exactly the same aluminum screen that the vendors are selling with the diamond pattern. The only difference is that they precut it for you and finished off the edges and put holes for the screws. IMHO, if it will function as well as the vendors are selling, who's gonna care. It's under your car and all we are doing is protecting the radiator. Some of you guys who spent 80 or 90 bucks for the screen are probably sour graping because you bought yours for eight nine or ten times that some of us DIY'ers spent and were getting the same protection as you guys. That's just too bad. Creativity is never a negative trait.

YOU KNOW WHAT IS SAD ?

THAT THIS FORUM SHOULD BE A PLACE OF DIFFERENT IDEAS FOR EVERYONE TO TAKE FROM IT WHAT WORKS FOR THEM AND WHAT THEY WOULD LIKE FOR THEIR CAR . GUYS LIKE YOU(COAST 7) THINK THEY SHOULD DECIDE WHAT IS BEST AND EVERYTHING ELSE IS A BAD IDEA . HATE TO BREAK IT TO YOU . THIS IS AMERICA WHERE A GUY CAN USE HIS CAP LOCKS BECAUSE HE LIKES THE PRINT AND BUY A NICER SCREEN BECAUSE IT LOOKS BETTER THAN HOME MADE . AND BEING NEW TO THIS FORUM DOES NOT MAKE THE NOOBIES IDEAS BAD , MABYE SOME OF THE OLD TIME FORUM MEMBERS HAVE BEEN AROUND TOO LONG , DEPENDS ON HOW YOU LOOK AT IT .

This does in fact apeale to me however,..I clean the radiator every time I change my oil and I usualy get a suprisingly large amount of stuff,.... and most of it would go right through that "screen"? so I guess it would work if you could easly remove it

Default Do-it-yourself screen

I'm going to make my own screen, as I cannot see spending $60 for something that is so easy to make yourself. The screen measures
12" x 27 1/2" with a 1" 30 degree bend on one end of the 27 1/2" length. You can use just about any kind of screen, but it should be aluminum or stainless steel to prevent rust. I plan on using the stainless steel coarse screen (p/n: SSEC) sold by Hoerr Racing products. You can make 2 screens from the 24" x 36" piece, which sells for $29.95. Their website is www.hrpworld.com.

Folks,
This forum is a great place for exchange of ideas, information and opinions as well with great members....BUT if you choose to attack fellow forum members the thread usually gets locked. So let's try to keep the high standards that we normally enjoy and help each other with a tolerance for different views. Just thought I'd say that before the "Moderators" get involved.

Tio,
I had done the same last winter, but recently noticed some leaves were still in the >1" space between the A/C and Radiator cooling fins. (You must remove the upper radiator support to see this.)

The fix is... the mesh must go 2" past the square bar to keep all junk out of the fins.

BTW The center air dam had already been trimmed for installation of the heat exchanger of the Mag Intercooler kit. I used the black plastic mesh so it isn't noticable even when someone is looking directly under the car.

I have no problem spending money on my car. I've purchased several things that have been very expensive, for instance the $500 Honker that others are too cheap to buy. But when I have the ability to make a part for $2 that vendors are selling for $60+, I'll use my hands instead of my wallet. Unless you feel like laying on your back to get under the nose of my lowered Z, I seriously doubt you're going to be able to tell I even have a screen at all. So for those who choose to spend the money, fine. Just don't give us cheapo's a hard time because we took an alternative method of accomplishing the same thing. It's a silly thing to argue about.

30 plus years ago when I was hanging out in a race fab shop, everything was DIY. Of course with big tools, the guys could DIY an aluminum tub and most suspension pieces...What ever was needed to keep a clients race car going. Some mod parts lend themselves to easy fabrication with simple tools, such as this one. Anyone so inclined should be applauded for successfully cutting, bending and installing a screen,....even on a $50K car. However, there are people for whom the act of holding a pliers is a difficult proposition, and there are people that enjoy spending money on the expertise of others who have big tools and access to finishing materials. Hey guys, either way works!!!!!!!!
