With the engine running, press the Active Handling button on the center console once. This turns both Active Handling and Traction Control off and the message TRAC/ACT HNDLG - OFF will display in the DIC. To enter the Competitive Driving Mode, press and hold the AH button (approximately 5 seconds) until the Competitive Driving displays in the DIC. The Competitive Driving Mode turns the TC off but leaves the AH on. With the second generation active handling (model years 2001 through 2004) you can engage the different modes while the vehicle is moving. For earlier model years, the vehicle must be brought to a complete stop. Each time the car is started, the system automatically defaults to both TC and AH on.
This is all covered in Section 4, Driving Your Vehicle, of your owners manual and you can find more info there.
Best be careful when turning TC or both TC and AH off as several here have learned the hard way. Best to save the TC/AH off and Competitive Mode for the track.
The other day I wanted to see what she had and decided to take it through the gears with 5500rpm shifts. Off the line Z06 has a tremendous launch but as the speed increased I noticed a pronounced cut back in power after each shift, for a split second.
My first Vette was a 1966 convertible, in 1974. A standard 327 4BBL with a 4 speed, how simple were they then. My 2004 Z06 is just a bit different. I picked it up this past June and have really enjoyed it but there's a whole lot more to these especially from a technology standpoint.

Spun my car in the middle of a road going 25MPH with AH/TC off, almost hit a tree. I'm damn lucky no one was in the road at the time. It doesn't take much, so be very careful. No real reason to take it off when not at the track anyways.
Comp mode at the track will slow down a very good driver. Instead use the active handling to tell you when you mess up. The goal is to go around the track as fast as you can and not have active handling kick on. If it does you made a mistake somewhere. if you can do this you can then consider turning it off after contemplating the possible ramifications may be high. Cheers!
It hard lesson to learn. Here is what can happen with TC off.
My Z is absolutely mint and I'd like it to stay that way. The photo above makes me think GM put all those systems on my Z for a reason. The advise you've given makes allot of sense so I'll leave the TC and AH on, unless I can find an empty runway somewhere
