How much can i cut off ? and does it make that much of a difference in the throw?
Not sure of the exact amount, but I know several people posted on this in the past. Seems like they were removing approx 1" to 1 1/2" or so, maybe slightly more, as long as they were able to retain about 1/2" to 5/8" of thread. If you have a die of the correct size and can cut some additional threads down a little further on the shaft, then maybe you could chop a bit more off of the total length. Yes, it will have a reduction in the throw since your hand is now closer to the pivot point. How much shorter, and is it enough for you, is a matter of personal preference.
Me? Like Sgt. Pyle said, I like the Hurst. HTH
Yep you can cut it down about an inch, just leave some thread for the ****. Suggest you cut a hole in a old towel to slip over the shifter before the cut to collect all the resulting metal shavings.
I drove with a cut shifter on my C5 for about a year and a half, definitly better than stock. About 3 weeks ago I installed the new B&M Ripper, a far superior feel and throw than what I had. Its quiet as well. If you can swing this mod I'd recomend it highly.

I've also been driving with the cut shifter for a while now. It is for sure worth doing since it's free. I've also got the new B&M Ripper ordered, but it's been back ordered for over 2 weeks. Go for it.
