Yep you can cut it down about an inch, just leave some thread for the ****. Suggest you cut a hole in a old towel to slip over the shifter before the cut to collect all the resulting metal shavings.
I drove with a cut shifter on my C5 for about a year and a half, definitly better than stock. About 3 weeks ago I installed the new B&M Ripper, a far superior feel and throw than what I had. Its quiet as well. If you can swing this mod I'd recomend it highly.

I've also been driving with the cut shifter for a while now. It is for sure worth doing since it's free. I've also got the new B&M Ripper ordered, but it's been back ordered for over 2 weeks. 
Go for it.
