I am thinking about installing a HUD in my '99 FRC. I understand that some later '99s have the enabled cluster. Does anyone know the cut-off number? My cars last seven digits are 5124267 build date of 3/24/99. Does anyone have a enabled cluster car prior to that? I know someone had mentioned this but I have not been able to find the thread.
thanks

My '99 had a HUD in it and I got it in early January 1999. So I would think it was built in December 98. Not sure of the VIN, but I placed the order in November, so they were available then.
This past weekend I helped a friend install a HUD in his 99 vert which was built in 1/99. It had a HUD enabled cluster. It was not hard to install but took 8 hours or so start to finish. It could be quicker depending on how cavalier you are cutting your dash.
Anybody else install a HUD and have information on this. I'm all set to buy the HUD just don't want to do the cluster as well, just hope I don't have to.

Yes----they were available for early '99 cars that had HUD's installed (Duh). BUT, if your early '99 was a non HUD car, all the left over '98 clusters (not HUD enabled) were used up before HUD enabled clusters were used 100% on the '99's. Barrier is simply trying to find out the cut off point when all '99's were switched over to HUD enabled clusters.
Still looking for the cut-off of non enabled HUD clusters.

Find out the VIN from the car noted in post 3 (above). Your car was the 24267 '99 C5 produced. If his VIN is lower than 24267---your car should be HUD enabled. Good luck..
My 99 (coupe) was built Sept 3, 1998 and the last 5 numbers on the vin are 04810 -- and it has HUD. So I'm guessing that it was really just a few very early '99s that don't have the HUD stuff built-in.

When I installed mine I asked the same question. Unfortunately the VIN does not have an impact on whether your 99 has the enabled cluster or not. Several dealers confirmed that some vette with very late VINs did not have the enabled cluster. Sadly the only way to know is to remove the dash or cluster to find out.
It should only take about 45 minutes to have the dash removed... Good luck. It is a great mod and worth the $$ and effort.
I'm curious about this as well....My car didn't come w/ the HUD and i'd like to install it if possible. My '99 FRC's last five VIN numbers are: 22184...Anyone have any idea?
Can anyone else chime in? I would think that if a great many of high build numbers (22000 and above) verify an enabled cluster that would pretty much nail it
I just hate the thought of tearing it apart and putting it back together and then doing it all over again. If I am reasonably sure I'll take the chance. Looks like I'm getting close.

There's no simple way to know. I did an install for a guy with a 99 frc and his build date was October and had the correct cluster. MOST 99 FRC's do not though, so you should probably plan on changing it.
If you plan on it with your install, then don't need it, you can just resell the cluster....
BTW, you will need to program the new cluster's mileage to match that of your car though...so maybe you want to pull it out and look just in case.
You can remove the cluster by dropping the steering column...getting to it a little quicker than removing the dash pad...should take about an hour to undo/redo it all. The entire HUD install only takes 2-3 hours when removing the dash pad.
Thanks all,Stingray your build date is two days before mine. I suppose that means that my FRC should have the enabled cluster.
Now to gather what I need.

BTW Does anybody have a set of Sheepskin seat Covers they no longer need? Any color.
