Didn't run a front plate on my 85 for 3 years until one afternoon leaving work in Henrico County was pulled over and ticketed for not having the front plate displayed. According to the officer, he could have the car towed because it was considered to be a non-registered vehicle; therefore, not legal to drive. Don't think this was true, but definitely got my attention. He gave me the ticket and told me he would let me go as long as I put the plate on the car that evening. The next day he was sitting outside the office complex until I went by and headed on his merry way once he saw the front plate. If I remember correctly the total cost was around $75 . Needless to say, I run the front plate at all times now.
I run with a front plate off and on. I have a clear cover which contours the car, but it looks better with the plate cover and lettering.
I got pulled over less than 2hrs after I bought my C5 a couple years ago (on King St. Alexandria), for not having a front plate. I told him I just bought the car and showed him the 30day plates with that days date. I told him I didn't have screws to mount the plate, and I honestly didn't. He let me go and told me to go by some screws.
I used to run mine without a plate in the Fredericksburg area, but then a Caroline County trooper pulled me over for nothing more then lacking that front plate. I got out of the ticket, but it's not worth the hassle to not put it up there. I just bought a bracket and made it look the best I could.
My belief is...the day that a state is 100% crime free, meaning all Murderers are arrested, all rapists are behind bars, all drug dealers are in the grave...THEN the cops should worry about a F'n Front tag.
The DC metro area has one of the highest violent crime rates in the country and the cops are worried about traffic infractions

Local cops don't pay much attention unless you're "attracting attention". State is not worth the chance. I recently had pulled over to chack out a noist, a state trooper came out of nowhere and the first thing he did was walk around to the front of the car. I put mine on for trips.
