They are spring loaded and just snap right in. Easily removed with flat blade screwdriver. They aren't attached to the lugs.

I removed the little aluminum fake "carbon fiber" ring from my OEM painted center caps and installed them on some chrome versions. It's only a few minutes to do and really dresses up the appearance. Got the chrome Z07's on mine now.
