Default Katrina Odor

We live in Louisiana and had our home flood. The C5 did not and was garaged up north. My wife saved come christmas bows from the house that at the time smelled ok. They were put in the C5 and left for 2 weeks. Now there is a musty odor. I was forced to keep the car closed in the garage up north. I have let the car sit open in the sun for 2 days and air out. Frebrez (mistake) was sprayed in the car. Now there is still a faint Katrina wif when you get in the closed car. This goes away quickly with the a/c on. Any suggestions on how to get his odor out. Thanks 99 Nassau Blue,, still dry.

I seem to remember a hand held vacum that also was an extractor (sprays water in front of the vacum nozel, and the water gets sucked up immediately). I would try that first. If you use any chemicals (soaps, etc) be sure they vette friendly.
Or, if you just can't stand it, and want to sell it to me...

I certainly thought Frebreeze would work or you. I have a car plug in air freshner that I use. I get it from Target. It "plugs" into the vent, as the air passes over the freshner the aroma gets into the air. I feel it has worked very good, I don't smell cigarette smoke anymore. You might also try buying some essintial oils and putting a few drops on a cloth. Put the cloth under the seat and in the compartment in the back. Sit the car out in the sun with the windows rolled up for several hours and the oils will release from the cloth.

Good luck and sorry to hear about your home. I hope the insurance comes through very quickly for you and your family.

Open up a box or two of baking soda and let them sit in the car. They will absorb the odor. You could also use a non-scented deodorizer or odor nuetralizer and spray the carpeting down.

I assume the bows are gone now - right?

Thanks to all for the help,, I didn't think about baking soda.

I did "after much frustration" shampoo the carpets that are in the car and washed with soap all the removable parts. The contractor that cleaned out Katrina muck offered an Ionizer to put in the car to kill oder. Not really sure how the inonizer works,, electron generator or ozone, I think probably electron. This generatoris good for short term but I am concerned that if left too long would damage the interior.

The generator produces it's own unique odor but it quickly dissipates. The contractor stated, "run the a/c" also to pass the air through the ducts and kill any mold/spores with the ionized air.

I really appreciate the offer to buy the car ,, I might have pre-kritrina bought a C6 , but now all bets are off and I will keep the C5 and rebuild the house . Thanks again. 99 Nassau Blue,, finally cleaned up and shown this weekend at car show.
